Worship
This coming Sunday, June 8, is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is remembered as the day that the Holy Spirit came down as a mighty rushing wind and with tongues of fire. When I was a child, Spirit was called the Holy Ghost and I confess I thought that was a bit creepy. I liked (and still do) the part of the story where the multitude of people that were gathered, though they were all speaking in their own mother tongues, could understand one another. That gives me a glimmer of hope in our current times of division. For me, today, Spirit embodies the sacred that is within each of us. I love the Hindu and Buddhist traditional welcome or
blessing “namaste”. It is a greeting sometimes translated as “the divine in me bows to the divine in you or “the light in me honors the light in you”. On Pentecost Sunday, Rev. Jen’s message will be “Suddenly God’s Wild Love Breaks Through: A Pentecost Invitation.” The Liturgical color for Pentecost Sunday is red, alluding to the Tongues of Flames that descended. On the following Sunday we enter the liturgical season of Pentecost (sometimes
also referred to as Ordinary Time). This is the longest church season, extending all the way to the beginning of Advent. The liturgical color is green, symbolizing growth. On June 15, we will be recognizing our graduates, Lucas Eddy, Lee Eddy and Charlie Phillip. June 29 is Pride Sunday. We will re-affirm UCV’s Open and Affirming Covenant and joyfully celebrate together.

Reclaiming the Light: Errico Rocco's "Let There Be Light" - an overview by Rev. Jen Zechlin
The opening words of Genesis, "Let there be light," have long been a source of wonder and contemplation. But for those seeking a faith that embraces inclusivity, justice, and critical thinking, traditional interpretations can often feel restrictive. Errico Rocco's "Let There Be Light" offers a refreshing and liberating perspective, one that resonates deeply with a progressive Christian worldview.
Rocco's exploration goes beyond literal interpretations, inviting us to see the creation narrative as a powerful metaphor for liberation and the unfolding of consciousness. He encourages us to move beyond rigid doctrines and embrace the rich symbolism of the text, recognizing its relevance to our contemporary struggles for justice and equality.
With grace and blessings,
Rev. Jen Zechlin
