Worship

]Inspired by the monks’ Walk for Peace, we spent Lent learning lessons from Aloka, the faithful dog, from Jesus and from the Buddhist teachings of contemplation. On Good Friday, as that road became increasingly perilous, we “set our face toward Jerusalem, toward the powers that are ranged against all those long suffering—to speak the truth in love to them.”

(these words from a wonderful new song by Rev. Christopher Grundy).Last week, Easter, we rejoiced in the hope of resurrection and continued on the Easter Road by hearing three different “takes” on the meaning of resurrection, both historically and for us today. As spring returns (after already having a taste of summer!) we need the hope and promise of Easter to sustain us as we continue to live in challenging times. On April 12, we welcome Snehashis Priya Parus to our pulpit. He is the monk who wrote the song “Walk for Peace” that was featured in our Lenten services. He will join us this Sunday on zoom, but he hopes to visit us in person later this summer. We also look forward to a special Earth Day service on April 26 with Phoebe Eddy sharing her message.

This morning as I was trying to pry myself away from the two adorable eaglets trying to figure out how to hold their heads up and find the fresh bits of fish that Mama Jackie and Daddy Shadow are trying to feed them, Debbie Hudson shared a post that I’d love all of us to think about. It’s a sign on an Episcopal Church that sounds like something UCV might have come up with. Do we want to create our own list? If so, let's all consider what UCV’s list of who we welcome would look like. Maybe we can post the list on the wall in our sanctuary and people can add comments about what to add, omit or change?

Poem by chaplain, Matt Moburg:

If you’re a church posting

prayers for peace and unity today

while my city bleeds in the street,

miss me with that softness you only wear

when it costs you nothing.

Don’t dress avoidance up as holiness.

Don’t call silence “peacemaking.”

Don’t light a candle and think it substitutes

for showing up.

Tonight an ICE agent took a photo of me

next to my car, looked me in the eye and told me,

“We’ll be seeing you soon.”

Not metaphor.

Not hyperbole.

A threat dressed up in

a badge and a paycheck.

Peace isn’t what you ask for

when the boot is already

on someone’s neck.

Peace is what the powerful ask for

when they don’t want to be interrupted.

Unity isn’t neutral.

Unity that refuses to name violence

is just loyalty to the ones holding the weapons.

Stop using scripture like chloroform.

Stop calling your fear “wisdom.”

Stop pretending Jesus was crucified

because he preached good vibes

and personal growth.

You don’t get to quote scripture like a lullaby

while injustice stays wide awake.

You don’t get to ask God to

“heal the land”

if you won’t even look at the wound.

There is a kind of peace

that only exists

because it refuses to tell the truth.

That peace is a lie.

And lies don’t grow

anything worth saving.

The scriptures you love weren’t

written to keep things calm.

They were written to set things right.

And sometimes the most faithful thing

you can do is stop praying around the pain

and start standing inside it.

If that makes you uncomfortable – good.

Growth always is.

The Ruth Sharp Meditation Garden sits in front of the United Church of the Valley building, a totem of peace and hope for all people. A place to come and sit to reflect on life.

Reverend Dr. Fred Schaeffer

The Christian Church Pacific Southwest Region sponsors various youth camps throughout the year at its own camp and conference center, Loch Leven, located in the Mountain Home Village area of the lower San Bernardino mountains. In the summer, week-long residential camp sessions are offered at Loch Leven for ages 3 through 18 (recent high school graduates).

Summer camps are organized by the Camp Ministry Committee of the Disciples of Christ Pacific Southwest Region and implemented entirely by dedicated volunteers made up of former campers, pastors, parents and young adults from around the Region. This program invites campers to explore, learn, and have adventures on Loch Leven's sunny 160 acres filled with streams, meadows, gardens, hiking trails, and wildlife. In October 2018, the Camp Ministry Committee agreed on a set of new CORE VALUES for its ministry and service. (AB506 Resources and Information is also available by clicking here.)

Winter Camp takes place over the Presidents’ weekend in February for Chi Rho/middle school (grades 6-8) and CYF/high school (grades 9-12).

DoC General Assembly

Save the dates for the 2026 General Assembly online, July 10–11, 2026! The theme, BEYOND: Love Surpassing (Ephesians 3:14–21), builds on the work that God began last year and marks the first General Assembly of the new triennium as we live into our new structure. Plan to join us online alone or with others at a local assembly gathering in your area for vital worship, discernment, and connection.

Mark your calendar now and plan to participate as we are further “rooted and established in love” that surpasses knowledge. More details to come.

FYI from the DoC

The Pro-Reconciliation and Anti-Racism Committee (PRAR) is the PSWR manifestation of the Reconciliation Ministry of the General Church. PRAR serves the PSWR by :

1. Advocating and mentoring efforts within the region to be an inclusive church reflective and representative of the diversity in the Southern California, Southern Nevada and Hawaii

Blessings!
