Black History Month

As we celebrate Black History Month this February, we honor the rich legacy that Black people played in the history of the United States, and to that end, we should celebrate the contributions of UDC alumni. UDC Political Science Associate Professor Amanda Huron launched a history exhibit last month in the Pepco gallery windows at the Harrison Substation of Friendship Heights that details the stories of two early 20th-century Black families in the neighborhood. Read More

UDC alumna serves as leader of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists


UDC alumna Yaneth Guillen-Diaz leads the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), a 3,600-member journalism nonprofit dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. 


Guillen-Diaz was recently appointed as the organization’s executive director after serving for more than 20 years in various roles of increasing responsibility in NAHJ, including chief operations officer. She is the association’s longest-serving staffer.  Read More

CDIMA Director Trinice McNally featured on Paramount+ docuseries ‘The Changemakers’


Trinice McNally, founding director of the Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs (CDIMA) at UDC, is being featured on a docuseries on the Paramount+ streaming platform. “The Changemakers” is an eight-episode docuseries that premiered on January 1 and follows “an A-team of impassioned campaigners as they discover the work of several remarkable activists and their respective communities around the world.” Read More

Washington Wizards celebrates HBCUs, D9 night


Join UDC and the Washington Wizards to celebrate the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the Divine Nine Organizations at the annual HBCU and D9 night at the Capital One Arena on Saturday, February 10. College of Arts and Sciences’ Science and Math Program chosen for Beckman Scholars


The College of Arts and Sciences’ (CAS) Division of Science and Math Program has been selected as a 2024 Beckman Scholars Program awardee. The Beckman Scholars Program is a 15-month mentorship research program for exceptional undergraduate students in chemistry, biological sciences or related interdisciplinary combinations. CAS Reads Big welcomes author Jamila Minnicks


The College of Arts and Sciences welcomed author Jamila Minnicks on January 18 for the spring CAS Reads Big lecture. Minnicks’ award-winning book, “Moonrise Over New Jessup,” explores the story of Alice Young, a Black woman navigating love and other challenges in the independent Black community of New Jessup, Alabama, in 1957.

A student watches a robot demonstration given by Gabriel Rizk with the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division at the January 27 STEM Expo hosted by UDC, in partnership with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The Expo also featured representatives from the U.S. Department of Defense, National Science Foundation and other civilian agencies.
