PhD Musicology Students Present at SGMRS Conference | |
| | Kayleigh Bagley and Cody Case presented research on October 14, 2023, at the Southern Graduate Music Symposium hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Bagley’s paper, “The Grotesque and the Ethereal: ‘Orinoco Flow’ in David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” explored the relationship between audience and film in David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011). Following along similar lines as Stanley Kubrick, and David Lynch, Fincher uses Enya to underscore an incredibly violent scene. This extreme juxtaposition calls for a different level of interpretation from the audience and challenges their role as passive spectators. Case’s paper, “Drumming in the Breaks of Samba-Afro: Bloco Afro Ilê Aiyê and Resistência Negra in Salvador, Brazil,” was based on ethnographic research conducted in Salvador, Brazil, and discussed how bloco afro Ilê Aiyê’s percussion breaks call attention to black resistance. Since the early 2000s, master percussionists of Ilê Aiyê have transformed samba-afro music by adding eclectic rhythms and innovative breaks into the repertoire. Case is the first to conduct in-depth research on this music among these ensembles since UF Ethnomusicology Professor Emeritus Larry Crook’s work in the 1990s and early 2000s.
