LA Council votes to place sales-tax hike on ballot to fund LAFD

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday authorized the placement of a measure on the November ballot that would hike the city’s sales tax by a half-cent to provide added funding to the Los Angeles Fire Department. In a 14-0 vote, the council approved the measure, which was proposed by the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City. The union, which represents the city’s firefighters, submitted more than 225,000 signatures to qualify it for the ballot. Councilwoman Traci Park was absent during the vote. The matter was approved without discussion from council members. Doug Coates, the president of UFLAC, urged the council to support the measure. “We’re asking you today to basically take one step and support this initiative ordinance to fund LAFD, and let the voters decide in November,” Coates said. “This ballot measure will provide new revenue that is dedicated entirely to the fire department for staffing stations and equipment. The LAFD is nearly half the size it should be to protect our nearly 4 million people,” he added.

Firefighters knocked down Boyle Heights warehouse fire. What happens next?

A fire that has burned for a week at a 500,000-square-foot cold food storage building in Boyle Heights was knocked down Wednesday evening, officials said, clearing the way for a cleanup that will involve removing millions of pounds of food from the site east of downtown Los Angeles. The fire at the Lineage warehouse, which started June 17 on the solar panel-covered rooftop of the heavily insulated building that firefighters likened to a giant ice chest, led to shelter-in-place orders and concerns about smoke drifting into neighborhoods. A particle pollution advisory, which had been in effect for several days, was allowed to expire Wednesday at about midday. Nothing dangerous beyond what's usually in structure fire smoke has been detected, authorities said, but the smoke has plagued air quality in parts of Los Angeles since flames erupted last week. The fire was knocked down as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department, which added that there are no active flames.

A fire burning along the northbound 405 Freeway in Mission Hills was causing traffic delays on Tuesday evening. What started as a big-rig fire near where the 405 meets the 5 Freeway spread to the brush and made its way up the hill, video from NewsChopper4 showed. Crews quickly worked to attack the blaze from the ground and the air, stopping its forward progress a little after 8 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

LAFD says fire damage may have left Westlake residence unsafe

A carport fire quickly spread to a two-story residence to its rear in Westlake, in an area south of Echo Park, and may be uninhabitable, the Los Angeles Fire Department said Thursday. Fire crews responded at 10: 53 p.m. Wednesday to 214 N. Benton Way, south of West Temple Street and the Hollywood (101) Freeway, where they found the flames had spread from the carport to the dwelling, said LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz. A total of 80 firefighters battled the blaze and extinguished it in 31 minutes.

At least eight people were involved in a three-vehicle crash that included a rollover on the southbound 101 Freeway in East Hollywood early Friday morning, authorities said. The collision was reported around 1:43 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the 101 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. A total of eight patients were evaluated at the scene, the LAFD said in an alert. Two people were transported to local hospitals for treatment, while six others declined medical transport.

Small plane crashes through fence into parking lot after landing at Whiteman Airport

A small plane with landing gear problems went through fence and crashed in a parking lot Tuesday morning after landing at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima. The pilot, the only person onboard, was 'extricated' from the plane and received medical attention, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The pilot was injured, but able to walk away from the plane. The Lancair Legacy 2000 -- a two-seat single-engine light aircraft -- touched down on the runway, but the landing gear did not properly deploy. The aircraft crashed through a chain-link fence and came to a stop under a tree in the lot on airport property. Parts of the plane, including fragments of a wing, were scattered in the lot.

Two people were hospitalized Sunday night after a violent two-vehicle crash in Los Angeles’ Palms neighborhood left one victim trapped inside a mangled vehicle, authorities said. Oxygen rushed to man stuck 30 feet underground in North Hollywood

A man trapped 30 feet down a narrow hole in North Hollywood needed an oxygen mask lowered to him as crews worked on a rescue plan early Thursday morning. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel and Urban Search and Rescue specialists were called to conduct a confined-space rescue near NoHo House North, in the 11000 block of Hartsook Street, around 3 a.m. The patient was described as an alert man trapped in a hole about 3 feet wide and 30 feet deep, according to the Fire Department.

Four people were hurt in a car crash in the Westlake District on Sunday. The collision happened at about 10:50 a.m. in the 3100 block of W. Geneva Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters extricated two of the passengers from the car. All of the occupants were taken to a local hospital in unknown condition.

Firefighters Rescue Patient Stuck Under Van in Florence Area

Firefighters rescued a person Saturday who became stuck under a van while performing maintenance. The situation was reported at 8:09 p.m. Saturday at 151 W. 59th Place, between Broadway and Main Street, in the Florence neighborhood, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jamie Stewart. Firefighters used technical rescue methods to get the male patient out from under the van, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment, Stewart said.

A hiker in need of medical assistance was airlifted directly from a cliff on the El Escorpion Trail to a hospital Saturday. The events began at 6:57 p.m. Saturday, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz. The LAFD searched from the air and ground for about 30 minutes before locating the unidentified female hiker on a cliff and a rescuer was lowered to assess and stabilize her, Lantz said. She was located in the 6800 block of Sunset Ridge Court, at Vanowen Street, Lantz said. “Due to the remote location and difficult ground access, a hoist operation was performed and the patient was flown directly to a local hospital,” Lantz said.

A natural gas leak at an apartment building under construction in Expo Park forced street closures in the area on Tuesday morning. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 3900 block of Figueroa Street just before 9 a.m. after receiving reports of a gas leak. First arriving units found a six-story apartment building under construction that sustained a natural gas rupture from a three-inch gas line. The gas company also responded to the scene and shut down the leak. Streets in the surrounding area were closed while crews worked on the incident.
