Arson probe underway after fire destroys beloved Sun Valley market

Multiple businesses were damaged after a fire broke out overnight at a strip mall in Sun Valley, with one business completely destroyed. Now, the incident is being investigated as possible arson. The fire first broke out shortly before 5 a.m. on Sunday in the 8500 block of N. Sunland Boulevard. It took over 100 firefighters approximately 34 minutes to extinguish the blaze, according to fire officials. No injuries were reported. The fire heavily damaged El Compadre, a beloved market and restaurant in the neighborhood. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed an arson team was called to the scene and is actively investigating the fire as possible arson.

Downtown LA neighbors say vacant buildings keep catching fire on same block

Neighbors and business owners on a downtown Los Angeles block say they're living with a dangerous cycle of fires at vacant buildings, claiming the blazes have happened repeatedly over the past two months with little action to stop them. Residents along South Hope Street say multiple abandoned buildings have caught fire again and again, leaving behind charred structures and raising fears that the next blaze could spread to occupied buildings. FOX 11 first reported on the problem in May, when neighbors warned that people were repeatedly breaking into vacant buildings on the block. They say those concerns have only grown as more fires have erupted. "I'd say maybe 10," neighbor Travis McGahey said when asked how many fires had happened in the past two months. When asked if it could be more, he replied, "Yeah, maybe more. I'd say 12." The repeated fires have scarred much of the block, with several buildings destroyed or heavily damaged. "There's an invasion of addicts and people breaking into properties, making them their home, and then fires erupt," said Juan Gutierrez, who owns a business on South Hope Street. Gutierrez said he has watched neighboring buildings burn while his business remains surrounded by fire-damaged properties.

Brush fire in Eagle Rock tears through home, injures LA firefighter

A hillside home in Eagle Rock was largely destroyed by a fire Thursday afternoon that began in some brush then extended to the structure, injuring one firefighter. The fire was reported around 2 p.m. near the northbound 2 Freeway, with flames burning about an acre of vegetation and advancing toward homes on Palmer Drive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The California Highway Patrol shut down several lanes of the 2 Freeway in the area due to the fire. It was not immediately clear when they would reopen. Video from AIR7 showed one home engulfed in flames in the 2800 block of Palmer Drive. Fire officials said everyone inside the home got out and were safe. Personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department and the L.A. Police Department evacuated some neighbors, but did not say how many.

Man Injured in Fire at Central-Alameda Duplex

A man was injured Monday in a fire at a duplex in the Central-Alameda area of Los Angeles. The fire was reported at a two-story duplex at 1556 E. 51st St., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The first-arriving units encountered smoke coming from the first floor of the structure. Thirty-eight firefighters responded and put the fire down in 13 minutes, LAFD spokeswoman Jennifer Middleton said. Some contents had caught fire in a first-floor unit and crews kept the flames from spreading any further, she said.

Barricaded domestic-violence suspect found dead in Woodland Hills townhome fire

An alleged domestic-violence suspect was found dead inside a Woodland Hills townhome that had became engulfed in flames while he was barricaded inside. At about 3:15 p.m. Sunday, July 19 a woman went to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Topanga Station to report that she was a victim of domestic violence, a police spokesman said. Officers responded to the townhome at 5720 N. Owensmouth Ave., north of Burbank Boulevard and east of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, and a 46-year-old man did not comply with efforts to take him into custody, the spokesman said. A SWAT team arrived at 7:17 p.m. after it was determined he had legally registered firearms, the officer said. After flames broke out, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jamie Stewart said, firefighters took up defensive positions, attempting to flood the fire with water from outside, Stewart said.

Firefighters Quell Auto Fire That Spread into Commercial Building

Firefighters Saturday knocked down an auto fire that spread into a one-story commercial building in the Central-Alameda community of Los Angeles, authorities said. The approximately 82 firefighters dispatched at 5:37 a.m. to 2122 S. Long Beach Ave. had the blaze out within 87 minutes of their arrival, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. “The commercial building had a roof collapse and made access to fire in certain areas of the building difficult,” said Jaime Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. “An exposure next to the fire building had smoke exposure, but no fire. “Arson will continue with the investigation and fire companies and heavy equipment will continue overhaul operations,” Stewart said.

Hollywood Headache on Sunset as Fire Guts Problem Property Again

Los Angeles firefighters shut down an early-morning blaze at 6720 W Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood on Thursday after flames tore through both floors of a two-story building. Vehicles destroyed as crews battle junkyard fire in Pacoima

At least 10 vehicles were destroyed as crews battled a massive junkyard fire in Pacoima Thursday. Firefighters were called to the business on the 12100 block of West Branford Street around 4:45 p.m. Sky5 footage showed heavy smoke billowing into the air as the collection of vehicles continued burning. Forty-one firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department surrounded the property and worked to stop the flames from spreading to nearby structures. The blaze was extinguished in just under an hour. “Firefighters found one patient who was medically evaluated but refused transport to a hospital,” LAFD said.

Firefighters knock down structure fire in downtown LA

Firefighters successfully extinguished a structure fire overnight in downtown Los Angeles. Crews were called to the 1200 block of South Hope Street just after 1 a.m. Saturday for a fire burning on the first and second floors of a building. Firefighters initially tried to battle the flames from inside the building, but due to the dangerous conditions, were forced back outside and tried to protect nearby buildings. After roughly an hour responding to the flames, crews were able to successfully knock it down. Video from the scene showed at least a dozen firefighters quickly responding to the fire.

Small grass fire burns in Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area

A small grass fire burned late Wednesday morning in Los Angeles' Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area. The fire was reported at about 10:45 a.m. in the 15700 block of West Burbank Boulevard. No significant wind was reported and no structures were threatened, according to firefighters. At least one water-dropping helicopter was at the scene, where forward progress was stopped at about 2 acres.

Crews from the Los Angeles city and county fire departments teamed up to fight a brush fire that burned at least two acres and prompted a SigAlert on the 5 Freeway in Sylmar Wednesday morning. The fire, which was burning in what was described as medium brush on the west side of the freeway, was first reported around 9:48 a.m., a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson confirmed to KTLA. Construction worker killed after tractor rolls over at Crenshaw job site

An investigation is underway after a construction worker was killed in a tractor accident in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw area on Monday morning. Los Angeles City firefighters responded to a construction site on the 3700 block of West Santa Rosalia Drive, between Marlton Avenue and Stocker Street, around 10:40 a.m. When the first emergency units arrived, they learned a male construction worker had been operating a tractor when the machine rolled over, trapping him underneath. A nearby heavy equipment operator was able to use their machinery to lift the tractor off the worker before firefighters arrived at the scene. Despite efforts to save him, the worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses believe a suspect driver was racing on surface streets moments before a deadly crash killed two people and left a young girl critically injured in Los Angeles’ Hyde Park neighborhood. The crash was reported just before 10:45 a.m. in the 3300 block of West 78th Street. Alvaro Castillo said the two people killed were his son and his son’s friend, while the young child is his granddaughter.

Person Killed in Northridge Train Collision

A person was struck and killed by a train Monday in Northridge, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters and paramedics responded to the area of Tampa Avenue and Nordhoff Street at around 3:45 p.m. and found one person dead at the scene, officials said. Trains were stopped in both directions while emergency crews checked the train for possible additional patients. No other patients were found, according to the LAFD.

Woman rescued after 40-foot fall from bridge into LA River in Boyle Heights, firefighters say

Firefighters rushed to rescue a woman who fell about 40 feet from a bridge into the L.A. River on Saturday. The fall was reported at 1:24 p.m. Saturday at 2750 E. Washington Blvd., east of Soto Street, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jamie Stewart. "LAFD Air Operations is performing a hoisting operation and will be transporting the patient for further medical care at a local hospital," Stewart said. Video from the Citizen App shows LAFD Air Operations hoisting the woman up to a helicopter for transport to a nearby hospital. Paramedics were lowered down to the patient to evaluate her condition before transport, he said.

A body was recovered in the Sunken City coastal ruin in San Pedro Tuesday evening. Firefighters responded at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to the 500 block of West Paseo Del Mar to reports of an individual in a body of water, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The unidentified victim was recovered and pronounced dead at the scene.
