Encounter with
"The Thing" in San Bernardino
                               By T. L. Keller

July 1, 1964

Case 104909: If you've ever been in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California, you know the terrain and arid climate. It's in the Mojave desert, and it's a railroad town and watering hole for those on their way to Las Vegas. At the time of the incident in 1964 (approximate year), the witness, Ramiro, was 10 to 11 years old and living near Barstow in a small town called Cadiz. At 8 PM, while playing with his friends, Rudy, Alex and others, they saw what they called the "Thing." It was near one of the salt cedar trees floating about one foot above the ground.
Ramiro, the primary witness, was within
20 feet or less of the entity. It was about five and one half feet tall, motionless and silent. It was brushed, silver metallic in color, and Alex said that its head was covered with a shiny metal "hub cap." The boys immediately ran for safety at Rudy and Alex's home.

The witness' testimony follows:

" This place was a railroad living community where Santa Fe employees and their families resided. Most homes were cement type dwellings and some had corrugated metal garages attached and used by all residents. Another community, the Santa Fe Depot was located 1 mile west of our home; Chambliss was around 3 miles away located adjacent to Route 66. It was a great place to live and explore.
"Often, we would gather and play various games; cowboys and Indians, dodge ball, kick ball, Mexican ring, kick the can and others, but on this particular night, I don't recall what we were playing.   I believe the moon was full because I seem to remember moon light and shadows. The "Thing" we saw was partially lit by the moonlight and was floating about 1 foot off the ground situated within arm's reach from the first salt cedar tree near the storage shed that was built in a circular fashion made from corrugated metal.
"I caught up to Rudy and Alex at my parent's house, they were sitting on the ground in front of the house explaining to my parents what they saw, Rudy was pretty well shaken up . As I recall, the others followed us, but they did not get a chance to see anything, they were a bit puzzled about what happened and eventually went home. I recall Mom gave both brothers a pinch of salt to calm them down - not sure if it worked at all. . . Rudy was scared half to death and crying, I just thought it was cool and so did Alex.   We talked about it the following day, and I went to the site to check for any sign left behind. In our discussion to compare notes, Alex brought up an interesting point that I did not notice, he said it had what looked like a baby moon hub cap on its head.   We all agreed it was like a silvery silhouette of a person floating off the ground, but I didn't recall the baby moon [hub cap].
"Many years later I realized the best way to describe the "Thing" we saw, was that it looked like a 500 yard "Echo" target used by USMC (US Marine Corps) for marksmanship training. Its shape was close to the photo and had a brushed silver metallic look - not too shinny.   It may have been about 2/3 the size of a standard home door, width was a little less than a standard door.   It did not move or make noise; it just floated in the air.   I don't recall any distinguishing marks, just what seemed like a brushed metal look."
