      FAMOUS UFO CASES

*Incident at Exeter - 1965*

The Exeter incident was a highly publicized UFO sighting that occurred on September 3, 1965 approximately 5 miles from Exeter, New Hampshire, in the neighboring community of Kensington. Although several separate sightings had been made by numerous witnesses in the weeks leading up to September 3, the specific incident, eventually to become by far the most famous, involved a local teenager and two police officers. The Exeter incident remains listed as unexplained by the United States Air Force. The November/December 2011 edition of
Skeptical Inquirer presents an explanation of the incident, based on details reported by the eyewitnesses.

The Muscarello Sighting

At approximately 2 am on September 3, 1965, Norman Muscarello was hitchhiking to his parents' home in Exeter along Highway 150. Muscarello, 18, had recently graduated from high school and was about to leave for service in the U.S. Navy. He had been visiting his girlfriend at her parents' home in nearby Amesbury, Massachusetts; since he did not own a car he would catch a ride to and from his girlfriend's home. However, at that time of night there was little traffic on the highway, and as he walked he noticed 5 flashing red lights in some nearby woods. The lights illuminated the woods and a nearby farmhouse (the farm belonged to the Dining family, who were not at home at the time). The lights soon moved towards him, and Muscarello became terrified and dove into a ditch. The lights moved away and hovered near the Dining farmhouse before going back into the woods. Muscarello ran to the farmhouse, pounded on the door and yelled for help, but no one answered. When he saw a car coming down the road, he ran into the road and forced it to stop. The couple in the car drove him to the Exeter police station.

At the station Muscarello told his story to police officer Reginald Toland, who worked the night desk at the police station. Toland, who knew Muscarello, was impressed by his obvious fear and agitated state. Toland radioed police officer Eugene Bertrand, Jr., who had earlier in the evening passed a distressed woman sitting in her car on Highway 108. When Bertrand stopped and asked if she had a problem, the woman told him that a "huge object with flashing red lights" had been following her car for 12 miles and stopped over her car before flying away. Bertrand considered her a "kook" but did stay with her for approximately 15 minutes until she had calmed down and was ready to resume her drive.

After arriving at the police station and hearing Muscarello's story, Bertrand decided to drive back to the Dining farm with Muscarello to investigate the field where he had seen the UFO.

           SKYWATCHING

The Brightest Visible Planets in November's Night Sky: How to See them (and When)

November is an unusually active month for the planets. First, virtually the entire Western Hemisphere as well as Europe, Africa and westernmost Asia will be able to see (weather permitting, of course) Mercury cross the face of the sun on Nov. 11 .

As the month progresses, Venus and Jupiter gradually close in on each other in the evening twilight sky, resulting in a spectacular conjunction on Nov. 24 ... and then the moon joins them on Thanksgiving evening. Saturn is visited twice by the moon on Nov. 1 and again Nov. 29. Mars is still relatively dim, but passes the brighter blue star Spica on Nov. 10. And finally, after crossing the sun on the 11th, Mercury vaults into easy visibility in the morning sky during the last week of the month, joining Mars and Spica.

Mercury - crosses the sun's disk on Nov. 11 between 7:35 a.m. and 1:04 p.m. EST (1235 to 1804 GMT), the last such event to be seen from Earth until 2032; the last to be visible for North Americans until 2049. Passing perihelion only five days later, Mercury quickly enters the morning sky and by the 18th the rapidly brightening planet rises in the east-southeast 70 minutes before the sun at magnitude +1.2. On the morning of Nov. 25, Mercury, now shining at magnitude -0.3, will be positioned about 5 degrees to the upper right of an exceedingly thin crescent moon. In an unusual paradox, you may need to use Mercury and binoculars to locate the moon, now only one day before new phase. Three mornings later, this speedy little world arrives at its greatest western elongation (maximum apparent separation) of 20 degrees from the sun. The planet comes up in a dark sky more than 1½ hours before the sun - just before the first light of dawn - from Nov. 22 to Dec. 4.

Venus - is still quite low in the southwest twilight. Although it shines at a brilliant magnitude of -3.8, it's hard to locate until 10 or 15 minutes after sunset.
Look for it there in the afterglow of day starting just 30 or 40 minutes after sundown. For observers around 40 degrees north latitude, it sets about 1 hour after the sun when November begins and about 1¾ hours after sunset - just after the end of twilight - by the end of the month.  Venus is gradually getting higher and easier to see, a trend that will accelerate and propel the planet to prominence in December. Telescopes will show it as a small, trembling, ever-so-slightly gibbous globe. Venus interacts with Jupiter in a spectacular conjunction on the evening of Nov. 24 and with a crescent moon on Thanksgiving. More details can be found in the Jupiter section.
