Creating Safer Roads Through the Synchronization of Self-Driving Vehicles

In a recent study led by Dr. Lili Du, a professor in the University of Florida’s Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, along with her research team, developed two cutting-edge control algorithms, which resulted in an intelligent control approach system. This system has shown excellent potential in synchronizing the movements of two self-driving vehicles to form a short platoon. It also can sequentially increase the platoon size as more CAVs join in and as traffic conditions permit. As self-driving vehicles, also known as connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), become increasingly common, seamlessly coordinating their movements is vital for safe and efficient driving on roads and highways. Among coordinated movements such as car-following and lane changes, vehicle platooning, where a group of vehicles travels closely together, shows promise for improving driving safety and efficiency, all while reducing energy consumption.
