UFTI Creates Transportation Human Factors and Systems Group
The UFTI recently created the Transportation Human Factors and Systems Group, which will be directed by Dr. David Kaber of the UF Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. This multidisciplinary group will bring together researchers interested in various aspects of the human factors initiative. Dr. Kaber had this to say: “UF has a world-class transportation institute that has made substantial contributions to transportation system engineering over the years. The scope of the institute is expanding with a synergy of researchers with interests in making human-centered transportation systems a reality for a broad range of system users. This year we will be identifying high priority research areas and working to develop research partnerships with external organizations in order to generate convergent, systematic and exact solutions for access and safe and effective use of advanced transportation systems. The group looks forward to contributing to the mission of UFTI.”
UFTI Signs MOU with SwRI to Improve Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety
The University of Florida Transportation Institute and Southwest Research Institute have signed a memorandum of understanding to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety through advanced sensing technologies. The technology will use cameras and other sensors to passively detect pedestrians and bicyclists. This information would then be directed to motorists through their vehicle dash or cell phone with visual and audible alerts. Florida currently ranks second in the country in pedestrian fatalities and first in bicyclist fatalities. It is our vision that our partnership will result in safer roadways and work toward a transportation system with ultimately zero fatalities.
