UFTI Staff Attends PedBike Coalition
The Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Coalition met April 24-25, 2019 in Tallahassee to work together on Florida’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategic Safety Plan. The Coalition is a coordinated effort among Florida Department of Transportation leadership, staff, departments and District representatives, and state, regional and local partners, charged with developing and implementing key strategies to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in Florida’s communities. FDOT Secretary Kevin Thibault encouraged members to continue to look for different ways to reduce fatal and serious traffic crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists. The UFTI Technology Transfer Center’s Patricia Turner and Paul Simpson participated in the meeting.
Catching Up with Our Alumni
Seckin Ozkul headshot
UFTI alumnus Seckin Ozkul graduated with his Ph.D. in August 2014. Ozkul’s dissertation research was on developing an advanced vehicle dynamics modeling approach in traffic microsimulation with emphasis on commercial truck performance and on-board-diagnostics data. His supervisor was Dr. Scott Washburn. During his graduate years, Ozkul commuted from Tampa, FL, to Gainesville, Fl, taking classes at UF and working on research projects.

“I have very good memories in Gainesville and at UF,” Ozkul said. “Hard work and great friends stand out during these 4 years of my Ph.D. studies.”

Right before graduation, Ozkul obtained a position as a research faculty at the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida (USF). For 4 years, Ozkul worked on national, state and local level funded research projects, serving as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI. These projects were mainly on freight operations, freight movement optimization, logistic activity center optimization, and operations research.

Most recently Ozkul has started a new position as an operations and supply chain management faculty member at the Marketing Department of the Muma College of Business; at USF. In this position he teaches operations and supply chain management-related courses and works on funded research projects on supply chain management, supply chain logistics optimization, logistic activity center optimization, and related topics.
