UFTI Presents in HealthStreet Distracted Driving Town Hall
UFTI affiliates were featured as part of an interactive town hall on distracted driving held by HealthStreet on February 11, 2020 . HealthStreet is a community engagement program at the University of Florida with a mission to improve the health of our community by bridging gaps in healthcare and health research.
Dr. Wayne Giang from Industrial and Systems Engineering spoke on pedestrian safety. Dr. Pruthvi Manjunatha from Civil and Coastal Engineering addressed impacts of distraction on traffic flow. Dr. Sandra Winter from UF’s Institute for Mobility, Activity and Participation shared a computer-based training designed for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) targeting teen drivers and distraction. The town hall was live-streamed nationally, moderated by Alachua County Deputy Sheriff Cary Gallop, and also included Dr. Shan Bao from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and Dr. Jennifer S. Bard from UF’s Fredric G. Levin College of Law. The UFTI was well represented at the town hall and participants were pleased to contribute toward community understanding of distracted driving, a pressing public health concern.

Dr. Sanjay Ranka to be the Keynote Speaker at ITCVT 2020
Dr. Sanjay Ranka, professor in the Department of Computer Information Science and Engineering in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at UF, will be the Keynote Speaker at the Third International Workshop on Intelligent Transportation and Connected Vehicles Technologies (ITCVT 2020) in Budapest, Hungary.
This workshop brings together engineers, researchers, and practitioners interested in the advances and applications in the field of intelligent transportation and vehicle technology.
Dr. Ranka will be presenting his work on Big Data Computing and Machine Learning for Intelligent Transportation and Connected Vehicles. This project involves developing machine learning algorithms and software to fuse real-time feeds from video cameras and traffic sensor data to generate real-time detection, classification, and space-time trajectories of individual vehicles and pedestrians. This information is then transmitted to a cloud-based system and synthesized to create a real-time city-wide traffic palette.
GatorITE Seminar With Dr. Louis Merlin
Dr. Louis Merlin, assistant professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida Atlantic University and co-author of the recently released book  From Mobility to Accessibility , gave a seminar to UFTI faculty and students on March 10.
In his presentation, he argued for the centrality of accessibility in the assessment of transportation performance. He reviewed the requirements for accessibility measures and clarified the necessary characteristics of true accessibility measures. He demonstrated how an accessibility-based analysis may yield different recommendations than a mobility-based analysis through a specific case study in the San Antonio region.
