An all-star benefit concert for Grammy Award-winning country singer John Berry – a former Tift County resident – and for the Music Health Alliance raised more than $300,000 last week to help Berry with medical bills after his recent successful treatment for tonsil cancer .

Among the country stars performing at the sold-out concert in Nashville, Tenn. , were surprise guests Trisha Yearwood and her husband, Garth Brooks . Yearwood , a Georgia native , has been a frequent visitor to Tifton through the years as her sister lives here. Her husband, Garth , has also been spotted around town .

When Berry lived in Tifton in 2012 , he told me an interesting story about Yearwood and himself . Before he had any hits, Berry was performing one night at a club in Athens . When he took a break , a young UGA student approached him and asked if she could go up on stage and sing a song or two.

"I told her gently that I didn't think that was a good idea ," Berry told me.

The young coed was Trisha Yearwood . Whenever he ran into her in later years, she never let him forget it , he said.
