| Graduation Party! | MARK YOUR CALENDAR: MAY 18, 2014 3PM
Students come to the University of Hartford for three or four years to get an education and hopefully learn a trade. Along the way Chabad Chevra and the Kulek family become their home away from home. One big happy family. When students thrive, the Kuleks are happy and proud. When it comes time to say goodbye, the Kulek family feels a sense of loss. Their family is leaving and moving on to new horizons.
Every year on Commencement Day, Chabad Chevra hosts a graduation party for our dear graduates. A beautiful gourmet affair following the commencement ceremony. Each graduate receives a special gift.
Parents, friends and family, please include us in your plans. Please don't leave without saying goodbye. We want to celebrate with you. Your joy is our joy.
G-d willing we will try to contact many of you by letter and phone. However, feel free to touch base with us and let us know that you will be joining us.

Student of the Month
| |
My name is Kirby Maier and I am a Junior at the University of Hartford, studying accounting and economics/finance.
Both of my parents are Jewish, but separated soon after my birth. My father had full custody of me and wanted to let me find my own religious values, without being forced into them. My mother has had much resentment towards my father and I for not pursuing a more Orthodox lifestyle. I was not formally raised to be religious, but always had an interest in discovering my heritage. I never went to any form of religious schooling, so coming to college and interviewing for Sinai Scholars was my best chance of getting a taste. Through this class, I was able to learn much about Judaism and its relevance to my life. The most important value I obtained stemmed from the Fifth Commandment, which is to honor your parents. It took me a while to realize that I honor and respect my father for never pressuring me into any religious beliefs, and truly allowing me to find myself. Aside from this, I realized that I am able honor my mother for providing me with the gift of life.
Pursuing Sinai Scholars allowed me to also find a home away from home, the Rohr Chabad House, as Rabbi Kulek and his family welcomed me without my having any true knowledge of Judaism. Spending Shabbat at the Chabad House provided me with a different perspective on my religion in a way that was not forceful. I was able to form my own ideas and truly grow as the Jewish woman I have always wanted to be. I could not be more thankful for such a great opportunity, and it all started with Sinai Scholars.
We are now taking nominations from readers for our next Jewish Student of the Month.

| About Us |

Rabbi Yossi & Dalia Kulek
|
A unique quality of the Chabad Chevra student center is the leadership provided by a family, husband and wife and children who create an atmosphere where students can feel safe and seek guidance on a variety of social, educational and spiritual issues, a sense of family and a 'true home away from home'.
Yes, we offer classes, concerts, social events, mentoring and more. However, what is truly distinctive and the one essential element of what we do is our family Shabbat and holiday meals.
Judaism was really never about affiliation, it is about family. My wife and I, and our children, have a Jewish home by campus. Every Jewish student is welcome to be part of our family.

| Fall Semester 2013 Review | |
Wow, it is amazing how fast the semester flew by! It feels like it was just yesterday and students were arriving for the beginning of the academic year. What a whirlwind it was. Chabad Chevra began the year welcoming students with our annual Kosher Barbecue. Hundreds of students attended and many students left wearing our Keeping It Kosher t-shirts. From there the race was on. Rosh Hashanah was two days after classes began. Of course, Chabad provided services and delicious meals. Now, what an understatement. Throughout all the High Holidays, Dalia Kulek cooked two meals a day and hundreds of students were able to enjoy some home cooking. By the time Sukkot came along students were settled in and able to fully enjoy the holidays. Over one hundred students participated in Sushi in the Sukkah. The highlight of the holiday season was, without a doubt, Simchat Torah. Students came and went all night long to dance with the Torah and enjoy delicious Chinese cuisine. Once again, home-cooked at Chabad Chevra by Dalia Kulek.
There is no organization as diverse and welcoming as Chabad Chevra. The real highlight of each week and the essence of what we are all about is Shabbat dinner. Hundreds of students from all walks of life came to meals and then came again. Engineering students, future educators, our friends in Greek Life, affiliated and non-affiliated students. We had Shabbat Under the Stars on Sukkot. Boy, do we need a bigger sukkah! While every Shabbat is a meaningful experience, there were several that had special significance. We had Pink Shabbat for Breast Cancer Awareness. We had Bring A Friend Shabbat in memory of those massacred in the Mumbai Chabad House. Thanksgiving Shabbat was a blast. Turkey, gravy and all, it was definitely a favorite. One of our biggest Shabbat dinners of the semester was cosponsored with the brothers of AEPi in honor of AEPi's 100 years. What a milestone! Our final Shabbat of the semester was in memory of the victims at Sandy Hook. Our student president, Danielle Schwartz, a Connecticut native and future educator, gave a speech that moved as all to tears.
Even in the month of December, while everyone else was winding down, Chabad Chevra was hard at work. Chanukah was all the rave. We had two giant menorahs on campus. President Walter Harrison lit our 12 foot menorah on the sixth night of Chanukah. We had our annual Latkepalooza party. We play a wacky game in which everyone in attendance walks away with a Chanukah present. This year students were able to light their own menorahs in the main cafeteria, compliments of Chabad. Following Chanukah, forty students got together for Sinai Scholars graduation and reunion. The semester ended on a beautiful high note as hundreds of students from Greek Life joined Chabad, Sigma Kappa and SDT to make Blankets for Babies. The fleece blankets were donated to the NICU at St Francis and hundreds of dollars were raised for causes that Sigma Kappa and SDT are dedicated to.
One semester in the books. Looking forward to bigger and better things this coming semester!

| Mazel Tov! | In the Fall 2013 it was so nice to be able to share simchas, special celebrations and milestones, with our students and alumni.
It was so special to be at the engagement party of our dear friend and past alumni, Joshua Kaye '11 and his fiance, Ellie Levy on August 25. It was a beautiful simcha and may G-d bless Josh and Ellie with many beautiful years together.
On October 13 we were so honored to partake in the wedding celebration of one of Elana (Spector) and Ehud Ben-Ari. Elana came to Hartford in 2004. Time truly does fly! A beautiful wedding and a most gorgeous bride! Many years of love and happiness!
This past semester the Kulek family also celebrated the weddings of Rabbi Kulek's brother, Moshe Kulek to Mimi Shifren on November 5 and his sister Shuli to Mendy Gerber on November 18. Just weeks later Rabbi Yossi & Dalia Kulek celebrated their daughter, Devora Leah's Bat Mitzvah on December 5. It meant so much to the Kulek family to be able to celebrate this special milestone with many students, community and alumni.
The semester concluded with the engagement celebration of Becca Bader '14 and Eric Maurer '13 on December 22. We are so proud of Eric and Becca and with G-d's help may they build an everlasting Jewish home on the foundations of Torah and mitzvoth! |
| Thank you to our 2013 Donors! | |
A special thank you to the 215 students, alumni, parents and friends who helped Chabad Chevra thrive last year! Not having any outside funding to rely on, we cannot succeed without the help of our partners!
