In honor of Sexual Health Week, join University Health Services and several on- and off-campus organizations for a time of sexual health education and advocacy. Sexual health is an important part of our overall health and well-being. Whether you are having sex or abstaining, looking to seek out specific resources, or are just browsing, we hope this fair will provide you with knowledge, resources, and support to make decisions that feel right for you - now and in the future.

Getting Started

Each issue of The Checkup will explore a specific issue/question related to equitable access to healthcare. If you have a question you would like to see addressed, send it to: wellness@umb.edu. 

Q: How do I make an appointment with General Medicine? 

A: Easy! You can web book through your “My Beacon Portal” account, call us, or just stop by the office. 

 

Q: Wait, I don’t have the School Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), can I still go to UHS? 

A: YES! General Medicine bills insurance like a normal medical office - open to all students regardless of what insurance plan they have. (PS... the Counseling Center is completely free of charge!) 

 

Q: What if I need care on the weekends, late at night or need to see a specialist, but have the SHIP? 

A: No Problem! UHS has 24/7 nurse triage available every day. If you need an in person visit that can’t wait until UHS reopens, SHIP is widely accepted at many medical offices, hospitals and urgent care clinics (it is a really good plan!!)

Welcome back to campus, students! Maybe you will find excitement in these next weeks, but we also know there will also be anxiety, insecurity, stress, and doubt. 


Emotions are normal, healthy, and part of being a human in the world. Thinking about feelings as “positive” or “negative” is a false dichotomy and unhelpful. Emotions are energy that your body experiences as it processes information from the world, and believe it or not, they are typically about your body trying to predict danger and keep you safe. But human nervous systems are so good at safety, that they sometimes react more strongly than a situation requires. For example, it is normal to feel anxious starting at a new school, or in a new class or major (all new things make our bodies more alert!).  


It won’t work to tell yourself not to feel something painful (that can even make things feel worse). So instead, be curious about where your feelings are coming from and why they might make sense in the experience or in the context of your life. Remember though that emotions are not facts and that they are prone to error. Remind yourself that emotions don’t last forever and that we all struggle with difficult emotions sometimes. Consider that a little bit of stress is even good for performance. Don’t try to hide painful feelings and consider trying to connect with others who get it (check out our group list)! 


Counseling can be helpful if you continue to feel stuck with feelings that you don’t understand, or you can’t cope with them safely. We are here and hope you can take good care of yourself and others this fall semester.

Community Spotlight

The Checkup will highlight a community resource each issue. If you have an organization that you would like to see featured, send to wellness@umb.edu

The Network/La Red is a survivor-led, social justice organization that works to end partner abuse in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, kink, polyamorous, and queer communities. The Network/La Red’s 24-hour hotline, 617-742-4911 provides confidential emotional support, information, referrals, safety planning, and crisis intervention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and/or transgender (LGBTQ+) folks, as well as folks in kink and polyamorous communities who are being abused or have been abused by a partner. They also offer information and support to friends, family, or co-workers on the issue of domestic violence in LGBTQ+ communities. All hotline staff are trained in domestic violence, peer counseling, crisis intervention, and safety planning. You don’t have to leave or want to leave your relationship to get support.
