Welcome back Beacons, new and returning!
As summer slowly ends and classes begin, it's a good time to think about how we will take care of ourselves this academic year. I believe that creativity and self-expression are some ways we can support our mental health. The days ahead may be busy, but taking the time to take care of ourselves, even in a small way, is just as important. Research indicates that creative engagement can help decrease anxiety, stress, and mood disturbances. There are various ways to do this, whether it's through art, dance, music, therapy, journaling, exercise, community events, etc. Tapping into this may feel clumsy or challenging, but humans show expression and creativity in so many little ways that we may not even think about. What is a small way you have shown creativity or self-expression in your day today? Was it a conversation with a friend, expressing your emotions, or moving your body? Remember “wellness and hope sometimes come in the smallest stroke or piece of creativity (Jeff Sparr, cofounder of PeaceLove)."
This year, the Counseling Center will offer various ways to support students' mental health, including Expressive Arts Workshops, Mindfulness (Koru) Classes, Wellness Walks, and Therapy Groups. We invite students to sign up for our newsletter and be on the lookout for more information on these events
