The mail and package thieves are at it again. The Homeowners' Representative Board and UCI Police Department have received recent reports of University Hills residents returning home to empty, open mailboxes and missing packages. The months leading up to the holidays are prime time for mail and package theft. If you suspect these types of thefts at your residence or observe suspicious activity, contact the UCI Police Department at (949) 824-5223. If it’s an emergency, call 9-1-1. Additionally, if you have a Ring doorbell or any other surveillance device that may have information that would be helpful in identifying suspicious activity, please contact the UCI Police Department. For package delivery safety, secure mail tips and information on installing a lockable mailbox, see below.
Holiday Safety Tips From the UCI PD
The UCI Police Department wants to wish everyone in University Hills a safe and joyous holiday season. Below are holiday safety tips to help you and your family.
Protect your holiday deliveries by:
- Tracking and turning on notifications for deliveries.
- Bringing your items inside as soon as they are delivered.
- Consider using locker deliveries at local stores if you know you won’t be home when the item is delivered.

Biodiversity in UHills
The Sustainability Committee is pleased to share updates on our Biodiversity Project. This is an inter-generational community-building project to plant a native garden at the corner of Pauling and Coltrane. We’re grateful for collaboration with the HRB, ICHA, UCI Nature, and community members. We expect to complete the preliminary design in November, followed by soil preparation and planting in winter/spring.
We shared preliminary plans during the Fall Fiesta. Several neighbors who have established beautiful native gardens shared pictures from their yards. More than 100 neighbors visited our booth to share ideas including:
· More shade and seating areas
· Coffee cart
· Rotating art
· Bridge over lowest point
· Butterfly garden
· Collaboration with local scouts and University High students
· Fountain or pond
· Interpretive signage, online resources
The renovation space is about 1/3 acre and is divided into two phases. Phase one is adjacent to the sidewalk and up to the gravel walking path; phase two will include the area above the gravel path up to the perimeter. Phase one will be replanted in 2025; phase two will be planted in 2026. If successful, we expect to select additional locations for restoration with native plants in subsequent years.
We welcome new members of the Sustainability Committee. Experience in environmental restoration is not required. Our next meeting is scheduled for Nov 6 at 6 pm in the UHills Community Center Media Room.
Let us know if you have questions or ideas. We welcome community feedback and participation.
Cindy Haq, Sabine Kunrath, Molly Schneider, Kim Huxman and Patty Bartell
