Biodiversity in UHills

Did you know we live in a biological hot spot? Southern California is home to a unique ecosystem and abundance of plant, animal, bird, insect and fish species that occur nowhere else on earth.

The UHills Sustainability Committee has proposed and received approval from the Homeowner’s Representative Board and the Irvine Campus Housing Authority to launch a biodiversity initiative. Our goal is to select and plant plants native to our region in select, unused community locations to improve our quality of life and to attract birds and butterflies.

We will work closely with the HRB, ICHA, landscape architects, UCI Nature faculty director Dr. Kailen Mooney and the UCI Nature staff to select and plant regional, native plants in unused community spaces as demonstration gardens. We will build our knowledge and skills to support neighbors who may wish to incorporate native plants in their yards.

The biodiversity project will start this fall by renovating the grass-covered spaces in the Oak Grove at the corner of Pauling and Coltrane Streets. This space will be replanted with California native plants, incorporating seating and a walking path. We will build on the good work of our local Girl Scouts who planted a butterfly garden in the same location a few years ago. Look for preliminary plans for these renovations at the Fall Fiesta in October. If this is successful, we expect to select additional locations for restoration in subsequent years.

We welcome new members of the Sustainability Committee. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sept 4, starting at 5:45 pm in the UHills Community Center Media Room. We welcome everyone; experience in environmental restoration is not required. This will be an inter-generational community-building project. We look forward to community feedback and participation.

The UHills Inclusive Pride Art Project

The HRB, with support from ICHA, is thrilled to announce the installation of the Inclusive Pride Art Project! The project will be located on the vertical face of the stairs just south of the intersection of California and Twain. The project is the result of a collaborative design effort led by Doug Houston, a resident, with input and suggestions provided by other residents over the past year. Installation will be undertaken by a professional artist working with University Hills teens who are interested in art. The artist, Coco Nella, is scheduled to commence work September 4th after the stairs are power washed on September 3rd.

The Inclusive Pride Art Project is an evolution of grassroots driven art in University Hills. It started with discussions at UHills’ first Inclusive Pride in 2022 after the installation of the BLM Mural at Playground Park. Conversations shifted to action at Inclusive Pride 2023 as passionate residents mentioned their ideas to ICHA.

An initial call for community comments and interest was sent to about seventy UHills queer residents in September 2023 following multiple informal discussions since Inclusive Pride in June. This led to Doug’s concept proposal in November. Wider community feedback was solicited at UHills Happenings in January, the Listserv, and via emails sent to all residents by ICHA on the HRB’s behalf. The result was an official proposal presented to the HRB in February, which was formally voted on and accepted by the HRB at their March meeting.

The UHills Inclusive Pride Art Project will be painted on the vertical face of the stairs leading up from the intersection of Twain Street and California Avenue between September 3rd and September 14th. Work will occur between 10am and 6pm. The stairs will be blocked to pedestrian traffic during the entire period of installation. The sidewalks above and below the project will remain open, except for short setup periods. Questions or concerns about the project accessibility should be directed to Nina Salcedo at nina.salcedo@icha.uci.edu. For more information about the background and inspiration for the project, the project location map, and the selected project design, please visit the UHills Inclusive Pride Art Project page at https://arcg.is/1b1Dq40.

This is the second community-driven art project in University Hills. The HRB is grateful to the many community members and ICHA staff who have contributed to help make these projects a reality! Click HERE to read about the Black Lives Thriving Mural project, our first community-driven art project.

Sincerely,

Your HRB
