During the last year or so everyone selling truck tyres had to face the reality that raw material costs had been increasing. The specific impact that this reality had and is having on the truck fleet business varies from company to company because it depends on terms, conditions and when contract deadlines fall. However, in general there are indications that the market is moving away from short term purchase price-only thinking as long-term value becomes a more critical criteria. Tyres & Accessories spoke with Marc Preedy, commercial director Goodyear UK and Ireland, in order to find out more.

As far as Goodyear's post-Wolverhampton retread production is concerned, Preedy explained that retread manufacturing is now conducted in the firm's Wittlich, Germany factory. According to Preedy, the German site offers tyres with no quality difference to the premium products it previously distributed. The main difference is that now Goodyear is "completely self-sufficient in terms of casings".

Registrations of new buses and coaches fell -15.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2017, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). A total of 2,105 units were registered in the period, with demand falling for the second time this year following five consecutive quarterly rises in registrations.

The viability of a sustained winter tyre market in the UK has long been categorised as doubtful, with sales rarely climbing to 2 per cent. Meanwhile recent improvements in tyre technology and the introduction of products looking to change their perception, led by the Michelin CrossClimate's success in the fleet market, have seen all-season tyres become an increasingly attractive proposition.

The latest GfK point of sale tracking data reveals that while sales of winter and all-season tyres receded from 2015-16 levels in the period July 2016- June 2017 in the car segment, strong growth of around 20 per cent (see table for full statistics) has been recorded by all-season tyres in the SUV/4×4 and LCV segments.

In the second quarter of the current financial year, Bridgestone was able to increase its turnover, however its profit figures took a tumble. The tyre maker reports a six per cent rise in net sales to 891 billion yen (£6.3 billion) in the three months to 30 June 2017.

A collaboration between Continental's Tire division and Kordsa, the Sabanci Group's textile reinforcing materials business, is expected to result in a new, sustainable system of bonding textile reinforcing materials to rubber-based compounds. Davanti launched its new Wintoura winter tyres at Autopromotec 2017, marking the company's initial step forward into the sector. Omsk Carbon, the Russian carbon black manufacturer, has announced that its new carbon black site will begin production in the second quarter of 2018 - a roughly 18-month delay compared to the original plan.

Bridget Neal has been named president, off-the-road (OTR), Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO), succeeding Taylor Cole, who recently took on the position of president of Firestone Building Products, LLC. Her appointment within this Bridgestone Americas business took effect yesterday.
