San Francisco Public Library Celebrates New Digital Media Center for Teens

On June 18, 2015, the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) and Mayor Edwin M. Lee held a special ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of The Mix at SFPL , a new 4,770-square-foot teen digital media center and learning lab located within the San Francisco Main Library. The Mix at SFPL includes a recording studio, video production studio, performance area and a makerspace with high-end tools and digital equipment.

The $6 million capital improvement project was managed by San Francisco Public Works with design advice from Bay Area teens who served on the San Francisco Public Library's Board of Advising Youth (BAY). SFPL is also partnering with a number of local program providers and tech leaders to offer a variety of workshops and classes to increase digital literacy skills among youth and help them navigate the new technology.

FCC Votes to Reform Lifeline Program, Libraries Voice Support

On June 18, 2015, the FCC voted  to add broadband internet access to the communications services covered by Lifeline, a government program that currently provides phone service subsidies to low-income Americans. The reform measures acknowledge the critical role that broadband access plays in closing the digital divide and helping more Americans participate in modern society, from employment to healthcare.

Following the FCC's vote, the New York, Kansas City and St. Paul  Public Library systems issued a joint statement supporting the decision. All three library systems currently employ mobile hotspot lending programs to help provide more families with internet access.
