The United Way for Leaders Conference will be attended by over 1,500 community leaders throughout the world. UW is seeking submissions for learning sessions that showcase best and promising practices that highlight how people and organizations are working together to create collective impact in the areas of education, income and health. Educational Alignment for Young Children
The National League of Cities' Institute for Youth, Education & Families has selected six cities, including Fort Worth, Texas; Hartford, Connecticut; Richmond, Virginia and Rochester, New York to participate in a technical assistance project that will align early childhood learning and K-12 systems to improve educational outcomes for children. A year has passed since Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City and the surrounding region. Queens Library has created a powerful video that memorializes the event and enlists community leaders - funders, nonprofit support organizations, business leaders... - to share stories of how the library provided a vital lifeline to people in need of both basic services and hope. Watch the video.

The first 24/7 fully automated library has been opened in the U.S. by Pioneer Library System, OK. Housed at the front of a local recreation center, the library is similar to a vending machine that holds a collection of 400 books, audiobooks and DVDs. Patrons can access this library at any time to browse, check out items, return items, pick up holds or pay their fines with credit cards. Get the scoop and watch this video

An ardent supporter of Denver Public Library, CO, has published an Op-Ed in the Denver Post that applauds the library's treasures, tracing its ongoing success to the philosophy of its founding Director, John Cotton Dana who said a library should be "a place of public happiness." Read the Op-Ed.

Celebrating its 100th birthday, Edmonton Public Library, AB, also honors its mantra with the newly published Just Getting Started: Edmonton Public Library's First 100 Years,1913-2013. This big landmark is being celebrated with special programs and lively videos

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has honored St. Louis Public Library, MO, with its Preservation Honor Award for its restoration of the Central Library.  Following a 2-year, $70 million restoration and renovation, the library today blends thoughtful historic preservation with dynamic modern design and new construction.
