Focus of the Week - Education

Jeanne Cawse-Lucas, MD, Vice Chair of Education

We are pleased to share that Kanav Gupta, MD, a 2025 graduate of the UMass Internal Medicine Residency Primary Care Track, began his fellowship in HIV and Viral Hepatitis at the Family Health Center of Worcester.

Monica Wiant, NP, will finish her NP Residency at FHCW in September and join Dr. Gupta in the fellowship, which is sponsored by the New England AIDS Education and Training Center. Welcome Kanav and Monica!

The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is pleased that Dr. Bahati Mweze has joined our one year fellowship program. Dr. Mweze is a graduate of the UMass Chan Family Medicine Residency. He joins our fellow, Dr. Onica Washington, who is completing a full time interrupted fellowship over two years. We are excited to have Dr. Mweze work with us as he expands his skills in geriatric care. Welcome Bahati!

The school has officially approved transitioning the family medicine clerkship back to a 5-week block format starting in AY 26/27 (April 2026)

This decision was made based on student, preceptor and clerkship administrative feedback. While the concept of a longitudinal clerkship has a lot of merits, it requires significant logistical support which the school was unable to provide.  A huge thank you to our core sites who have handled the bulk of our students in the longitudinal model and our community preceptors who have accommodated the longitudinal model- your flexibility and willingness to try a new format has been greatly appreciated! With this change, we will reduce from 12 to 9 blocks per year, which means there will be more students to place each block. We hope to reenergize all of our preceptors, especially our community preceptors who provide such a rich experience for our learners!  If you are a preceptor and interested in taking any number of medical students for a four-week family medicine clerkship, please contact Mary.Lindholm@umassmemorial.org. The new clerkship will allow students to spend 4 continuous weeks at their assigned site and then spend 2 day at an elective site during their 5th and final week which will also includes workshops, didactics, and testing.

Worcester and Fitchburg residencies had a successful recruitment fair at the AAFP FUTURE Conference from July 31st - August 2nd. Students’ passion for Family Medicine was energizing! We look forward to another great recruitment season this Fall/Winter. See photos below.

Reminder! Complete your annual performance review in Interfolio with your supervisor as soon as possible. Please contact Heather Garron (heather.garron@umassmemorial.org) if you have any trouble accessing Interfolio. Resources for faculty and supervisors are available here.

FAQs:

  • Q: When is the Annual Performance Review (APR) due?

A: The preliminary due date for your APR meeting was July 21. Given the transition to Interfolio, please complete your supervisor meeting by mid-August so chair review and comments can be submitted to the school by a hard September 1 deadline.

  • Q: Should I be completing the CV portions of Interfolio?

A: No. The CV function is still being built to make sure it is useful for faculty. Right now, faculty do not need to enter CV info. You only have to paste accomplishments for the past year into the APR.

  • Q: What should I do with any supplemental materials (if applicable)?

A: Send your UMass format CV, evaluations, and supplemental materials (if applicable; may include maternity care and residency teaching supplements) to your supervisor. Your supervisor can cut and paste summary comments into the "additional feedback" section. Alternatively, there is a way to upload the supplemental materials into Interfolio by clicking "add file" after you log into Interfolio.
