Focus of the Week - Research

Jennifer Carroll, MD, MPH, Vice Chair, Research

Suzanne Mitchell, MD, MS, Director, Research

We’re delighted to share some updates from FMCH’s research group! It’s been a very eventful year among the research group.

As many of you know, we have faced a lot of tumultuous developments since the early part of the year that we have had to address. Thankfully, we have had some bright spots to celebrate in recent weeks. A grant led by Dr. Alison Karasz, ASHA Bangladesh--An Integrated Intervention to Address Depression in Low Income Rural Women, was recently renewed for its fifth year. A second grant led by Dr. Suzanne Mitchell, The Re-Engineered Discharge for Diabetes Care Transitions (REDDCAT2): Screening and Addressing SDOH Needs at Hospital Discharge was also recently approved for its second year of funding. Three other grants involving our research faculty, Motivational Interviewing Training to Promote COVID-19 and Influenza Vaccination (MI-VAX): What Providers Need and Patients Want, Structural Racism and Engagement of Family Caregivers in Serious Illness Care, and Improving Chronic Disease Outcomes Across the Lifespan by Addressing Structural Racism were recently reapproved.

The research group has been very busy with grant submissions. Here is a list of the grants that have been submitted over the past six months.

We also have had some excellent students join us on our projects. In future newsletters we will continue to highlight the wonderful contributions they have made to our group.

Two medical students, Amrita Iyer and Milan Rosen, have been working with Dr. Jennifer Carroll on an asthma study, Improving the Quality of Care for Asthma Patients at risk of exacerbations (iCARE). They recently completed a poster of their experience-check it out here!

Additional shout-outs to students Neha Perumal, Yildirim Ozdemir, and Maria DelPico.

  • Neha has been working with Dr. Mitchell and Barbara De La Cruz on the REDDCAT2 pilot, which will test our recruitment strategy and gather qualitative perspectives from participants.
  • Yildirim and Maria have been working with Dr. Mitchell on a manuscript exploring incongruence between care recipients and caregivers.

We’ve also had some recent presentations and publications to celebrate:

  • Jennifer Carroll had a paper published in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine titled "Health Care Utilization in an Academic Integrative Medicine Center, 2011-2022".

https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/jicm.2023.0758

  • Sonal Singh had a paper published in Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics titled "Developing and Refining the Pregnancy Algorithm CErtaInty Tool (ACE-IT) for Validating Pregnancy Outcomes". https://ascpt.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/cpt.70036?domain=author&token=REMRNVNYCDEYJCCXGERK
  • Amber Cahill, Steve Martin and Dan Mullin published an evaluation of the "Care of Opioid Use Disorder" course in the journal Substance Use and Addiction.
