All faculty hired in the past 12 months are encouraged to attend the virtual UMass-Chan New Faculty Orientation on January 14th from 9-11am. Registration here.

The Worcester Family Medicine Residency was approved for funding for a permanent expansion of 1 resident per PGY! Stacy Potts did a heroic advocacy lift on behalf of primary care training, helping to secure the funding for the additional position. The plan is to recruit 5 first year residents to Barre this 2025 Match cycle, followed by Hahnemann for Match 2026 and FHCW for Match 2027. The additional position will rotate between the health centers, with 13 residents at each health center and an overall complement of 39 residents.

WFMR resident rotation schedules are finalized for the rest of the academic year- a feat never before achieved!

Ethics Corner

Philip Day, PhD

Healthcare and Law Enforcement

For this month’s Ethics Corner, I want to reaffirm points made during the excellent Grand Rounds delivered by Chief Residents Andrea Chin, Tekiyah Shabazz, and Brennan Dagle on working with law enforcement officials in healthcare settings.

While healthcare and law enforcement professionals can have overlapping priorities, there are specific measures that you can take to ensure patients’ constitutional rights and uphold your ethical duties to promote autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. On this last principle, please see reference 1 below for a framework on health justice.

Pearl 1: Protecting patients’ rights. 1) Approach and identify officers who are present in patient care areas. 2) Preserve patients’ right to withhold consent from police searches, seizures, information disclosures, or physical access. 3) Refer warrants, court orders, or requests from law enforcement to authorized parties in your hospital, such as your administrative supervisor, legal department, or department of medical records.

Pearl 2: A Medical Provider Toolkit Developed by the Working Group on Policing and Patient Rights, this toolkit ( reference 2) provides a comprehensive account of patients’ constitutional rights, principles of medical ethics, and several scenario guides on how to approach law enforcement activity in the hospital.

Pearl 3: What to do at UMass. Each situation is different. When in doubt, call the Legal Team at 508-334-1700 or Risk Management at 774-443-7475.

Med Moth is looking for speakers at its winter event Wednesday January 8th, 2025 at 5:30 pm in the Albert Sherman Center Multi-Purpose Room (Cafeteria). Med Moth is an event based on The Moth Story Hour where 6-8 members of the UMass Community (SOM, GSN, GSBS, GME, and Baystate) share stories for 5-10 minutes each. Past talks have been about the speaker's journey into medicine, meaningful patient encounters, or other experiences that have shaped one's personal or professional identity in health care. Some have been humorous (a horrible first day of internship) and others have been more serious (coping with the guilt of making a medical error) but the topic is up to the speaker. We seek to highlight a diverse collection of voices and capture the richness of experiences of the members of our UMass-Chan community.

Those interested in sharing a story can contact the event organizers, Aly Wayne (alysandria.wayne@umassmed.edu) or Mariam Tolba (mariam.tolba@umassmed.edu). Talks do not need to be scripted or pre-approved.
