The STFM Medical Student Educators Conference took place this past week in Atlanta Georgia. Elizabeth Irvin, Kristina Gracey, Cynthia Jeremiah and Mary Lindholm presented the following sessions:

Kristina Gracey presented a poster entitled-“Increasing Racial Equity in the Care of Birthing: People Incorporating Education and OB Advocates Into Perinatal Care” which was co-authored with medical students Ivy Mwangi and Sara Hansen

Cynthia Jeremiah and Mary Lindholm presented “Should Your Clerkship Be Pass/Fail? The Impact of Non-Tiered Grading on Student Evaluation, Wellness and Match Outcomes”

Mary Lindholm presented a lecture entitled "Utilizing Reflective Essays to Promote Well-Being and Explore Learners' Experiences in FM Clerkship” which was co-authored by Philip Day and was part of a multi group presentation entitled: “Clerkship and Course Director Challenges 2024: Leadership Development and Collaborative Solutions to Wicked Problems”

Elizabeth Irvin, Class of ‘26, presented her poster entitled "All in your Head: Recognizing Brain Injury Among Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence" summarizing her work with Lucy Candib supported with a Huppert Scholars Award.

Topic: Massachusetts End of Life Options Act (S1331/H2246)
Question 1: What is the MA EoL Options Act?
Answer 1: In February 2023, this bill was filed in the Massachusetts legislature. If passed, it would allow MA residents who are terminally ill, mentally capable adults with a prognosis of 6 months or less to live to “make an oral request for medical aid in dying and a prescription for medication that the patient can choose to self-administer to bring about a peaceful death.” The bill is modeled after Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act.

Question 2: What’s the process for patients and healthcare providers if the bill passes?
Answer 2: The bill provides several safeguards, checks, and requirements for use. Amongst other things, the bill requires that: two physicians to confirm the terminal illness prognosis; patients are informed about all of their end-of-life options including hospice and pain management; two requests, 15 days apart, must be made by the patient; the patient must be able to self-ingest the medication; patient mental capacity must be assessed and confirmed. Furthermore, no healthcare provider, personnel, or professional is required to participate. Professional codes of ethics provide support for either participating or declining to participate in medical aid in dying processes.
Question 3: What’s the status of these laws nationally?
Answer 3: Currently, 8 states in the USA have legislation providing for medical aid in dying. 18 states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, are currently considering such legislation. These bills remain controversial legally and ethically, and I encourage you to read the full text of MA S1331/H2246.

The Department, in partnership with the medical school library, will host an event on March 6th at 6:00pm live on campus for a discussion of the book and about transitions in general as a medical clinician. Department Member Recognition
Congratulations to Sara Shields for receiving the 2024 Advocacy/Public Health Award from the Mass Academy of Family Physicians. This award recognizes the efforts to advocate on behalf of patients or the specialty of family medicine and bring awareness to an issue in public health or impacted access to care.

- Deaths in the US due to COVID, 3.1%.
- The test positivity rate is 10%, down from 10.8%.

- There were 2,292 reported COVID cases January 28-Febrary 3.
- There have been 79,584 cases this season.
- There were 37 confirmed deaths during the same period and 740 confirmed deaths this season.
COVID-19 UMMMC
- The 7-day average positivity rate is 8.1% as of today.
- Patients in-house with primary COVID-19, 43. (10 of 43 requiring Dexamethasone)
- Fully vaccinated 83%.
- Of the 5 in the ICU, 4 are fully vaccinated.
