The first-year class of medical students will hold a health fair at the Worcester Public Library on March 13th from 10:00am-2:00pm. As part of their new curriculum, MS1 were paired with community partners to develop patient education and service offerings for the tables at the fair.  


February is National Children’s Dental Health Month! Family medicine providers can screen patients for oral health conditions as part of prenatal care, educate on the importance of oral health, and refer patients to dental professionals. The Protect Tiny Teeth Implementation Guide and Overview & Results Reports from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics provide a roadmap for clinics interested in improving maternal and child oral health. 

      

The New England AIDS Education and Training Center (NEAETC) under the leadership of Phil Bolduc and Vanessa Carson-Sasso collaborated with the expertise of Jess Baer in the Center for Integrated Primary Care (CIPC) to produce a 2.2 minute video to dispel the myth that people actively using cannot be treated for Hep C: HEP-C Treatment Myths #1 on Vimeo.

Josephine Fowler, MD, MBA, Vice Chair of Clinical Services

Henrietta Lacks is an African American woman whose cancer cells have been used to perform research to improve medical care.

  • Cells were used without her permission or the permission of the family.
  • She died of cervical cancer.
  • The cell line developed from Mrs. Lacks’ cancer cells, sometimes known as HeLa Cells, reproduce indefinitely under specific conditions.
  • I had the honor of working with these cells during the early days of research.
  • It is an honor to see her noted as the mother of modern medicine.

COVID-19 US

  • Over the last 14 days, 5,261 patients were admitted to the hospital with COVID-19.


COVID-19 MA

  • From February 4 to February 20, 2024, there were 2,353 confirmed COVID cases in MA.
  • There were 29 confirmed deaths.
  • There are 774 confirmed deaths due to COVID-19 in MA this season.


COVID-19 UMMMC

  • The current 7-day positivity rate is 6.1%.
  • The 7-day average of patients with COVID in house is 23 (78% fully vaccinated).
  • Of the 3 in the ICU, all are fully vaccinated.
