Message From the Chair

 Diane McKee, MD, MS


I am pleased to share that Jeanne Cawse-Lucas, MD will join the department in August 2024 as our Vice Chair for Education. Dr. Cawse-Lucas is a UMass alum, Class of ’06, and completed her residency at Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency. She is an associate professor and the Theodore J. Phillips Endowed Professor of Family Medicine, at the University of Washington School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine (UW/DFM), where she leads a number of programs for medical students. She also serves as the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs. She developed UW/DFM’s program to promote clinical placement and mentorship with students and preceptors with similar backgrounds and interests, founded the Family Medicine Women’s Faculty Group, and served on UW/DFM’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee. She is past president of the King County Academy of Family Physicians and former speaker of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates.

 

Dr. Cawse-Lucas' clinical interests include women's health, preventive medicine, and practice management. She will be invited to attend our retreat on May 16th so please come and meet her!

In Honor of Black History Month

The first Black History Month was in 1926. It was 50 years later before it was celebrated. It is now recognized in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Contributions of Black or African Americans in Science and Medicine

  • Dr. James McCune Smith, the First African American to earn a medical degree. He attended the University of Glasgow in Scotland.
  • The first African American Physician in the US - Dr. James Durham.
  • In 1853, Dr. McCune and Frederick Douglas started the National Organization of Colored People.
  • Black Electrical Engineer- Granville Tailer Woods, known as the ‘Black Edison’, was the inventor of mechanisms for safety and communication on rail systems.
  • American agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion - George Washington Carver, Professor at Tuskegee Institute.
  • African American inventor of refrigerated truck systems – Frederick McKinley Jones (first African American to be awarded the National Medal of Technology)
  • First to synthesize the natural product physostigmine; earned 130 chemical patents; lauded for humanitarian achievements - Percy Julian, Chemist.
  • First African American Female Engineer - Marion Jackson, mathematician and aerospace engineer (posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2019).

Lucy Candib has authored/edited a book entitled Family Doctors Say Goodbye with her co-author/editor Will Miller. The Department, in partnership with the medical school library, will host an event on March 6th at 6:00pm live on campus for a discussion of the book and about transitions in general as a medical clinician. Please plan to attend.

Congratulations Stacy Potts, MD, MEd, Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education for receiving one of six 2024 Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Catalyst Award to develop a pilot training simulation program aimed at improving patient safety and improving the relationships between patients and their physicians.

COVID-19 UMMMC

  • Current 7-day positivity rate 6.8%.
  • Current in house COVID positive patients are 58 with 74% fully vaccinated.
  • Of the 58 COVID-19 positive patients, 6 are in the ICU and all are fully vaccinated.


COVID-19 MA

  • Last week there were 3,192 confirmed COVID-19 cases in MA.
  • For the season, there have been 76,700 confirmed COVID-19 positive cases in MA.
  • There have been 29 new deaths due to COVID-19 in MA last week and 697 confirmed cases this season.
