Don’t forget to register for our 50th Anniversary Celebration and Reunion on March 15th in collaboration with the MAFP spring refresher. Register here! Saturday afternoon will kick off with a casual networking lunch followed by a program that explores the role of family medicine in health and health justice and culminate with a networking reception.

Focus of the Week - Education

Jeanne Cawse-Lucas, MD, Vice Chair of Education

Save the date! The faculty retreat will be the afternoon of Thursday, May 15th. Keep your eye out for a call for proposals for retreat sessions; all sessions should make good use of in-person interaction.

The morning of May 15th, we will host a new faculty series for any faculty who have joined in the past two years. We will cover various aspects of transitioning to a job in academic family medicine. If you are a new faculty member, please save the whole day! We will reach out to you directly with more information.

Shout out to Family Medicine teamwork for saving the Medical Spanish MS4 elective! When the prior course chair (outside of our department) was unable to continue on short notice, imperiling an elective for almost 60 graduating students, Frank Domino caught wind of the problem, Kristina Gracey agreed to assume leadership of the course for the remaining academic year, and Heather Garron will administer it. Thank you all for putting learners first!

The Office of Admissions is seeking mentors for the Admissions Outreach Program. Participation will include being connected to a team of UMass Chan medical students who will facilitate informal Zoom meetings with 10-14 applicants 1-2 times per month, starting in December through April. The students on your team will coordinate everything, and you will simply need to show up, chat for 20-30 minutes, and leave the students to mingle (unless you wish to stay for longer). Depending on interest, it is likely you will be paired with another faculty member to share coverage of a group. If you are interested in connecting with applicants in this manner, please fill out this survey. Feel free to reach out to bradley.colarusso@umassmed.edu with any questions.

Ethics Corner

Philip Day, PhD

Topic: Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare Ethics

Part 1: An AI Bill of Rights

In what is likely to be a multi-part series, I want to focus on an issue that is top of mind for most of us in both our professional and personal lives: the proliferation of artificial intelligence. I welcome any feedback or suggestions for future Ethics Corners on this topic.

Question 1: Are there any federal guardrails or guidelines for the development and use of AI?

Answer 1: Sort of. There is currently no federal legislation or set of regulations that restrict, dictate, or delimit the development, use, or design of artificial intelligence. However, the White House Office of Science and Technology did issue a Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights (AIBoR) in October 2022.

Question 2: What’s in this AIBoR?

Answer 2: Billed as a “sector-agnostic…framework [that] provides a national values statement and toolkit,” it should be used in the absence of “existing law or policy…to inform policy decisions.” It contains 5 principles to guide “AI use, design, and deployment.” They are: Safe and Effective Systems; Algorithmic Discrimination Protections; Data Privacy; Human Alternatives, Considerations, and Fallback; and Notice and Explanation.

Question 3: How does this apply to healthcare?

Answer 3: All the above principles are relevant for healthcare education, practice, and policy. (I will cover them in subsequent editions of this series.) However, in summary, they can be combined in this way: “Patients have a right to unbiased, transparent, confidential AI systems that are monitored by humans, and they have the right to know when and how they are used in their care.” In terms of clinical practice, the final principle – Notice and Explanation – is perhaps the most ethically salient in patient care.
