| The MA Women of Color Coalition is hosting their annual meeting on January 20th at Holy Cross. On the agenda for the Health and Wellness committee is a project to compile a directory of women of color clinicians across the state, and planning a MAWOCC Health and Wellness Symposium for mid-September. | |

The Worcester Parent/Caregiver Guide to Community Resources is one of the most robust and regularly-updated community resource compilations for the city of Worcester, with many resources also serving the broader region, now available in a digital version in English and Spanish. You can order hard copies in English or Spanish for $4.00 each.
Support and inspire local students! The MA Science and Engineering Fairs seek judges for regional competitions March 8 (high school) and April 29 (middle school), both at WPI from 8:00am -12:00pm. Judges are also needed for the statewide High School Fair at Gillette Stadium, April 5th, from 8:00am - 3:00pm, and the Middle School Fair on May 11th at Worcester Technical High School from 8:00am -12:30pm. Judging Requirements: Four-year college degree in field(s) of science, technology, engineering, or math; or 5+ years of professional and/or academic experience in one or more of those fields. High school teachers and parents of participants are not eligible to judge.

Paula Gardiner, MD, MPH and Shahida Fareed, PsyD, will lead participants over 5-weeks in a training that aims to improve wellbeing and personal resilience by teaching mindful self-compassion skills to deal with distressing emotional situations, and difficult patient interactions as they occur at work. All healthcare professionals interested in enhancing patient connections, improving communication skills, or promoting well-being in the healthcare field are welcome. The course is $180, and payment can be made by credit card, UMass internal transfer, or UMass CME funds. The Department, in partnership with the medical school library, will host an event on March 6th at 6:00pm live on campus for a discussion of the book and about transitions in general as a medical clinician. Dr. Pivovarova and colleagues published a paper describing how community providers can establish and sustain relationships with jails providing medications for opioid use disorders. Department Member Recognition
Hugh Silk was quoted in the Worcester Business Journal about the new grant from RIZE Massachusetts to help providers address the oral health needs of those with substance-use disorder. Updates on Billing and Coding
What is G2211?
- Reflects the time, intensity, and practice expense resources involved when physicians provide office/outpatient visits that build longitudinal relationships with patients.
- Address most patients' health care needs consistently and continuously over longer periods.
- The Medicare payment for this addition is $16.04
Key factors:
- Longitudinal care. Use where you have assumed or intend to assume the ongoing responsibility for the care of the patient.
- "the continuing focal point for all health care services the patient needs."
- Private payors are not required to pay for these services. We will need to check which private payors are covering this code.
- Do not use code when you use 99211 or have used modifier 25.
- Do not use G2211 when your relationship with the patient is of a discrete, routine, or time-limited nature. For example, a physician who sees a patient for an acute concern should not report HCPCS G2211 if they have not also assumed responsibility for the patient’s ongoing medical care or do not plan to take responsibility for subsequent, ongoing medical care with consistency and continuity over time.

The common signs of COVID-19 in 2024 include headache, sore throat, cough, and fatigue. People with moderate to severe COVID-19 should be isolated for 10 days.

- The 7-day average of percent positivity for UMMMC is 9.0% compared to 10.6% for UMMHC.
- The prior 7-day average as of 1/16/24 is 56.
- Of the 56, 10 are in the ICU.

Of the 56, 30% are admitted for primary COVID.
COVID-19 MA
- For the week of 12/31 to 1/6, there were 4,999 COVID cases.
- There have been 64,738 COVID cases reported this season.
- There were 29 confirmed deaths due to COVID this period and 564 reported this season.
