Focus of the Week - Community

Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Community Health

Join our Community Health Committee

If anyone is interested in joining the Department's Community Health Committee, please reach out to Hugh Silk at hugh.silk@umassmemorial.org. The committee meets every other month for 1 hour. The goal is to have representation from each health center and division of the department and to create ways for all members of the department and all learners to better engage with the community and learn alongside our neighbors. A great way to expand your CV, academic service, and general helpfulness too!

Food Insecurity

This month we will focus on food insecurity options. As the federal government recently passed a bill that will have dramatic consequences directly on food security (SNAP changes) and indirectly (increased unemployment from job cuts, increased prices from tarifffs, Medcaid cuts) - being aware of where to send people for food is important.

First - you can use Community Help either within EPIC or online. You put in your zipcode and then click on food. You can choose food pantry, help pay for food, meals, etc. Note - the Worcester County Food Bank is not a place to get food - they deliver the food to food pantries and people can visit their local food pantry based on their zip code. (The Food Bank website does have resources to help people find pantries). There are also meals provided daily around Worcester and Fitchburg.

St John's Church, 20 Temple Street has breakfast 5 days a week, 7:30-9am.

Salvation Army, 640 Main Street has lunch 9-2pm, 5 days a week.

Mustard Seed, 93 Piedmont Street has dinner 5-6:30pm, 5 days a week.

Our Father's Table, 40 Boutelle Street, Fitchburg, serves dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-5:30pm.

Other food programs can be found here.

You can also sign up to volunteer at these organizations or donate money if you are able.

Inspire the next generation of Family Physicians! MassAHEC is planning for AY25-26! Longitudinal Preceptors Needed!

With the next academic year fast approaching, Longitudinal Preceptors are needed for incoming MassAHEC Rural and Urban Health Scholars. Students work with LPs for 6 sessions in year one and 6 in year two.  More than 30% of these scholars have gone into Family Medicine due to the lessons learned during these early years of med school. This feedback summarizes it best:  “Working with my Longitudinal Preceptor has been one of the most enriching aspects of the program. …taught me to tailor my interviews to the patient population to better address their needs. …taught me the importance of interprofessional teamwork and integrating behavioral health into primary care. Observing how she collaborates with other healthcare professionals has emphasized the significance of a team-based approach to enhance patient outcomes.” If interested, please contact Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu.
