As a department we want to help you figure out how to navigate the new DEA requirements.

See below:

Summary of New Training Requirements to obtain or renew DEA registration.

Beginning June 27, 2023, practitioners applying for a new or renewed Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration will need to attest to having completed a total of 8 hours of training on opioid or substance use disorders, as well as safe pharmacological management of dental pain. To renew your DEA Registration or apply for a new DEA Registration to prescribe Schedule II – V controlled medications, you will need to attest on your DEA application that you have either:

  • Completed at least 8-hours of training (training can be cumulative from the last 5 years; it does not have to be completed in one session) on opioid/other substance use disorders that has been approved by certain specified organizations; or
  • Hold a current board certification in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry from the American Board of Medical Specialties, American Board of Addiction Medicine, or the American Osteopathic Association; or
  • Graduated within five (5) years in good standing from a medical, advanced practice nursing, or physician assistant school in the United States that included successful completion of an opioid or other substance use disorder curriculum. Training must include treatment and management of patients with opioid/substance use disorders.

If you previously held a waiver from the DEA and SAMHSA that was granted because you met the training requirements to prescribe buprenorphine, you have already met the criteria, and can attest to meeting the training requirement. More information can be found here:

COVID-19 UMMMC

  • Current 7-day average percent positivity, 8.4 percent.
  • The prior 7-day average was 5.8 percent.
  • In-patients confirmed positive, 4 cases. 75 percent primary COVID

Telehealth MA Post-Pandemic

MassHealth will continue to allow MassHealth-enrolled providers to deliver a broad range of MassHealth-covered services via telehealth and, through September 30,th 2023, will reimburse for such services at parity with their in-person counterparts. “State’s largest insurer extends full telehealth coverage indefinitely”. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts plans to continue paying for telehealth sessions at the same rate as in-person visits for primary care and chronic illness care. The payment is not for a quick phone call, but covers interactions that have the same qualities as an office visit, whether by phone or video.

Prescribing controlled substances

The Drug Enforcement Administration and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration have extended all telemedicine flexibilities regarding prescribing controlled substances through November 11th, 2023. Clinician-patient telemedicine relationships established before November 11th, 2023, will have an additional year (until November 11th, 2024) to continue using telemedicine flexibilities for controlled medications that were in place during the COVID-19 PHE.

As we transition back to in-person visits, UMMMS is asking that we see patients in person as much as possible.
