Focus of the Week - Education

Jeanne Cawse-Lucas, MD, Vice Chair of Education

Thanks to the efforts of Josephine Fowler, Jeanne Cawse-Lucas and Maryanne Adams, we are able each year to deliver high quality, AAFP approved CME via our Grand Rounds structure. To better address your needs, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please answer this 4 question (3 minutes, max) survey to help us learn what you want.

We are excited to report that both of our palliative care fellows will join our division after they graduate on June 30th!

  • Philip Hewes, MD, will practice outpatient and inpatient palliative care.
  • Marie King, MD, will practice inpatient palliative care with a focus on care of patients in the University Emergency Department.

Our palliative care faculty (including Carolyn Murphy and Jennifer Reidy) taught the 3rd year medical school class in required simulation training in goals-of-care conversations with patient actors during their medicine clerkships over AY24-25.

Jennifer Reidy and Liz Dykehouse served as faculty in the Clinical Pathway for 1st year medical students on the topics of communication skills and therapeutic relationships with skills practice.

STFM has released 5 modules (each approximately 15 minutes long) to support meaningful, effective mentorship in academic medicine. Whether you're mentoring faculty or learners, these modules offer practical, evidence-based tips to enhance mentoring across roles and settings.

Module topics include:

  1. Mentorship Basics-developing the relationship
  2. Navigating the Complexities of Mentoring--going beyond the basic; addressing deeper topics
  3. Addressing Unique Needs of Historically Marginalized Groups-approaching mentees with sensitivity and understanding
  4. Advancing in Academic Medicine-actionable steps to help mentees get to the next professional level
  5. Difficult Conversations in Mentoring-giving corrective feedback; helping mentees deal with extreme pressures

We encourage you to take advantage of this valuable, free educational resource.

On behalf of Ginny Van Duyne, Missy Gleckel, Liz Dykhouse, Eric Rosenthal, Susan Hogan, Trish Seymour, and Mary Lindholm:

As leaders of our 3 DFMCH residencies (Worcester FMR, Fitchburg FMR and Preventive Med) and at the medical school, we collaboratively facilitated an interactive workshop on written feedback, with the goal of identifying both expectations for completion of written evaluations of learners and strategies for improving our completion rates and quality of written feedback.

DFMCH Expectations for Completion of Written Evaluations of Residents and Medical Students:

  • Complete 1 written evaluation every session/shift you supervise a resident 60% of the time.
  • Complete 60% of WBAs the student sends.
  • Communicate feedback about students to main preceptor for summative evaluation.

Strategies for Improving Written Feedback:

  • Use AI: Use voice to text in ChatGPT to transcribe your verbal feedback then copy/paste this written feedback into the evaluation system.
  • WFMR & FFMR: Download the MedHUB app and save your log in to your phone so you don’t have to remember your password each time. Email Cassindra.wamester@umassmemorial.org (WFMR) or

angelique.ranno@umassmemorial.org (FFMR) if you need your password reset.

  • UMass Chan: Remind the medical student to initiate a WBA and provide a QR code for you to use right then and there (instead of having them send it after they leave your session).
  • Use the open-faced sandwich strategy to decrease stereotype threat:
  • Framing statement: “I’m giving you these comments because I have high expectations and I'm confident you can reach them.”
  • Give a specific affirmation of their skill/strength in this area.
  • Give a piece of specific feedback about a behavior.(not personality/character)
  • Use the BOSS mnemonic:
  • Brief Observation: “I saw/noticed…”
  • Significance: “That’s important because…”
  • Suggestion: “I recommend that you look at/try to/use…”

Each talk is about the speaker's journey into medicine, meaningful patient encounters, or other experiences that have shaped their personal or professional identity in health care. At this installment of MedMoth, we will also be having several patients share their stories with us. We seek to highlight a diverse collection of voices and capture the richness of experiences of the members of our UMass-Chan community.
