Focus of the Week - Community

Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Community Health

MassAHEC Scholars:

Rosa FernandezCenter Director of the Central Massachusetts AHEC at Center for Health Impact, presented program updates to the DFMCH’s Community Health Committee on June 11th, 2026. Rosa co-directs UMass Chan’s AHEC Scholars program which provides didactic, clinical, and community-based training opportunities for medical students to work with rural and underserved populations. Participation in AHEC Scholars at UMass Chan is strongly associated with matriculation into family medicine and other primary care disciplines. Check out Rosa’s slide deck for great information, pictures, and to learn more about AHEC Scholars.

AHEC Scholars work with many DFMCH faculty and staff including Philip Day, MassAHEC Program Director, James Laford, MassAHEC Evaluator, Nick Hajj, Rural Scholars co-Director, Erik Garcia, Hugh Silk, Suzanne Cashman, Lorna Chiasson (and many more!).

MassAHEC is currently recruiting faculty and residents to serve in the Longitudinal Preceptor Program (LPP) for these AHEC scholars. These students are very interested in family medicine and primary care, so you will have very engaged students. MassAHEC is also looking for mentoring in the skills sessions for the next academic year. This is a great opportunity to mentor first and second year medical students and to show them how great it is to be in Family Medicine. Please email Philip.day@umassmed.edu if you’re interested!

Interested family physician faculty should send a CV and brief letter of interest to Heather Garron (heather.garron@umassmemorial.org). See job description for more information.
