Message From the Chair

M. Diane McKee, MD, MS, Professor and Chair, UMass Memorial Ledwith Chair in Family and Community Medicine

As we head into July, wishing everyone a safe and fun-filled summer. Below are two important updates.

Chancellor Transition

I also want to recognize that outgoing Chancellor Collins shared his thoughts as he concluded his 19 years as Chancellor. Chancellor McManus shared his plans. We wish them both well.

Supporting Student Choice of Family Medicine

Big wins don’t come along all that often, so I want to highlight that the state appropriation for scholarships to students who pursue family medicine is official! Thanks to everyone who has helped to advocate for family medicine at the state level. This took many people, over many years, to lay the groundwork for this to happen.

Below is the message that Dean Flotte sent out last week to the entire medical school student body. The Admissions Office is also sharing this information with incoming students.

I wanted to share some exciting news. UMass Chan medical students who go into family medicine may be eligible for a scholarship.

As reported in this UMass Chan News story, Massachusetts has allotted $10 million from the state’s 2026 supplemental budget to UMass Chan Medical School for a pilot scholarship program intended to boost the number of medical students going into family medicine.

The pilot scholarship, which runs through 2033, provides aid to medical students pursuing family medicine careers who demonstrate financial need who, after residency, commit to practice for five years in an approved community health center or hospital health care system in underserved areas of the state. Scholarship offers will be made by the Office of Financial Aid.

Final details are being worked out, in the meantime, email

Linda.Cragin@umassmed.edu to opt in to receiving additional information as it becomes available.

Sincerely,

Terence R. Flotte, MD

Provost and Dean, T.H. Chan School of Medicine

Elizabeth Chair for the Dean of Medicine

Upcoming Events

There is no scheduled Grand Rounds on Tuesday, June 30th. We hope you have a great summer. We will be back on September 8th.

Focus of the Week - Diversity

Jennifer Bradford MD, MPH; Director of Social Justice and Inclusion

Josephine Fowler, MD, MBA, Vice Chair of Clinical Services

As June comes to a close, we'd like to take a moment to recognize Pride Month. Pride Month is a time to celebrate, recognize, and honor the LGBTQ+ community and its contributions to society. It is observed each June in commemoration of the Stonewall Uprising, which began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, in New York City. At that time, LGBTQ+ individuals frequently faced discrimination, harassment, and police raids on establishments that served as important gathering spaces for the community.

The events at Stonewall marked a turning point, as members of the LGBTQ+ community resisted ongoing injustice and discrimination. The uprising, which continued for several days, helped spark modern LGBTQ+ rights movements across the United States and around the world.

Pride Month provides an opportunity to reflect on this history, celebrate the achievements and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals, and reaffirm our commitment to creating communities where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and belonging. It reminds us that every person matters and deserves the opportunity to live authentically and be valued for who they are.

As a reminder, the UMass Chan Diversity and Inclusion Office (DIO) is collecting stories for its Belonging Project. Below is a brief explanation of the project by the DIO and a link to submit an entry

Stories of Belonging

Belonging is something we build together.

“Over the past several weeks, we have been receiving submissions to our new initiative, the Belonging Project… We will [share] reflections from members of our community about experiences that give them a sense of belonging at UMass Chan Medical School. Thanks for all who have shared and please continue to spread the word about the significance of an inclusive and connected community. “

Junior Faculty Development Program

**Deadline extended - applications due July 6th**

The JFDP is an intensive, longitudinal, and foundational faculty development program that consists of a comprehensive curriculum in topics on research, education & academic/career development, and an independent scholarly project conducted under the guidance of a senior faculty mentor. Program sessions are weekly for two hours each, (7:00-9:00am), September-May. Most sessions are offered virtually via Zoom, but there are in-person sessions as well (approximately one per month). Visit the website to apply.

The department is seeking a Faculty Advisor for the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) and the Primary Care Principles Optional Enrichment Elective (PCP OEE), sponsored by the AHEC grant. The Faculty Advisor supports, encourages, and nurtures students' interest in family medicine and helps student leaders make the FMIG and PCP OEE experience valuable for members. This may include suggesting new and topical ideas based on individual exposure to clinical practice and trends in family medicine, facilitating hands-on workshops and discussions connected with Principles of Primary Care OEE, serving as the liaison between the department of family medicine and student leaders, introducing students to the range of careers in family medicine, helping with student leadership transitions, and collaboration with other regional and national FMIG advisors. Interested family physician faculty should send a CV and brief letter of interest to Heather Garron (heather.garron@umassmemorial.org). See job description for more information.

If you have not received the link or the form, please let Heather Garron know at heather.garron@umassmemorial.org. Please review resources and FAQs for completing your annual review using the link provided below:
