Message From The Chair

Congratulations to Erik Garcia for receiving the UMass Chan Leonard Tow Humanism Faculty Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation on May 31st. Participating medical schools select one medical student and faculty member each year. Erik provided the keynote address about the importance of vulnerability and practicing self-compassion. The UMass Chan Gold Humanism Honor Society welcomed 36 medical students, six residents and four new faculty members this year. Several of the students are in MassAHEC Urban and Rural Health Scholars and FMIG. Mike Ennis and Hugh Silk serve as the advisors to the UMass Chan chapter.

Weekly Learning - Women's Health

Clinical Question:

Are urine samples as accurate as vaginally collected samples to detect chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis in women?

Bottom Line:

In this study, the overall sensitivity for detecting chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomonas in women was greater with vaginal samples than urine samples.

Sixteenth Annual Edward Smith Lecture

The sixteenth annual Edward Smith Lecture will be occurring on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 at 4:00pm on the subject Nothing New Under the Sun: The Struggle for Health Equity. (see flyer for additional information)

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Thomas Zand Refugee Health Initiative (see flyer for additional information) made possible by the funding from the Estate of the late Dr. Thomas Zand – local pediatrician, advocate of children, refugees, and education, which includes:

1. Thomas Zand Lectureship on Refugee Health, to engage and recognize national leaders in this field. Lectureship recipients will deliver an annual talk on refugee health to the UMass community and engage with local refugee-serving community organizations.
2. Thomas Zand Refugee Health Community Award, given annually to recognize the work done by Worcester community organizations working with newly arriving refugees and immigrants. 3. Thomas Zand Refugee Health Scholarship, provided to UMass Chan learners to support their attendance to the North American Refugee Health Conference.

Funding Opportunity: The Blue Cross Shields of MA Foundation Special Initiatives grant program provides organizations with a one-time grant of up to $50,000 to pilot or launch a new project over a one-year period which empowers communities to advance health equity. The Department of Psychiatry is enrolling participants with Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) in a clinical research study to look at the effectiveness, safety, and usefulness of an investigational nasal spray medication when it is used alone to improve depressive symptoms. Participants must: be 18 years of age or older, have been diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression, have not adequately responded to at least 2 different antidepressant treatments, must be comfortable with using a nasal spray and not be pregnant or have plans to become pregnant. CLINICAL UPDATES

COVID-19 MA

• There were 803 new cases in the last 7 days leading to May 30th.
• The 7-day average of percent positivity is 3.82%.
• There were 14 patients in the ICU with 5 being intubated.

COVID-19 UMMMC

• As of June 4th, the 7-day average percent positivity was 5.4%.
• Prior 7-day average of in house COVID positive patients is 9.
• Of the 9, 67% were admitted primarily for COVID. There were 78% fully vaccinated.
