Message From the Chair

I want to be sure you are aware of two upcoming events:
APRIL 2nd: Dr. Kiame Mahaniah, Massachusetts Undersecretary for Health, will give Grand Rounds as part of the first Warren Ferguson Community Health Visiting Professorship day. His topic is Inspiring Clinicians to Engage with their Community. The Grand Rounds will be hybrid; you can sign up to participate in person on the University Campus and stay for discussion over lunch by emailing Pam Tero at pamela.tero@umassmemorial.org. If you wish to make a donation to the Warren Ferguson Community Health Visiting Professorship you can do so here.
MAY 16th: The Department’s Annual Retreat with our theme Family Medicine Proud!, from 12:30 - 6:30pm at the UMass South Street campus in Shrewsbury. Please save this date on your calendar. Make sure you sign up for the retreat on May 16th when registration is available!

Focus of the Week - Education

Match Day is Friday!! We are anxiously awaiting meeting out new residents and seeing where all the students going into family medicine this year matched!

Speaking of all the students going into family medicine this year, we decided to tap their energy and try to figure out what drew them towards our specialty. Linda Cragin and Philip Day held a focus group which yielded a lot of great information! All your mentorship and showcasing of the highs and sometimes lows of family medicine really influenced them. We will be presenting the results at our upcoming departmental retreat and hoping to develop new ways to build on their enthusiasm! Make sure you sign up for the retreat on May 16th when registration is available!
We completed another year of the Teaching of Tomorrow conference this weekend in Northampton, MA. Over 75 physicians, nurses, APPs and BH specialists all worked together to advance their teaching skills. The interprofessional nature of the conference improved all our awareness of each other’s discipline.
Finally, our new longitudinal third year clerkship starts on April 1st! Join Mary Lindholm and Trish Seymour for grand rounds on March26th when they will review why we are making this change, the logistics of the schedule and the new competency-based evaluations.

Announcements
Med Moth is looking for speakers at its spring event, scheduled for March 20th at 6:30 pm in the Albert Sherman Center Multi-Purpose Room (Cafeteria). Med Moth is an event based on The Moth Story Hour where 6-8 members of the UMass Chan community (SOM, GSN, GSBS, and Baystate) share stories for 5-10 minutes each.

Past talks have been about the speaker's journey into medicine, meaningful patient encounters, or other experiences that have shaped one's personal or professional identity in health care. Some have been humorous (a horrible first day of internship) and others have been more serious (coping with the guilt of making a medical error) but the topic is up to the speaker. We seek to highlight a diverse collection of voices and capture the richness of experiences of the members of our UMass Chan community.
Those interested in sharing a story can contact the event organizers, Aly Wayne ([email protected]) or Mariam Tolba ([email protected]) for more information. Talks do not need to be scripted or pre-approved.
Register now for the Coalition for a Healthy Greater Worcester Annual Meeting, Thursday, March 21st, 4:00-6:00pm. In person at Worcester Community Action Council, 18 Chestnut Street, or via zoom.
22nd Annual Primary Care Days will be held Tuesday, April 9th and Wednesday, April 10th, 8:30am - 2:00pm, Beechwood Hotel, 363 Plantation Street, Worcester. Please see flyer for additional information and schedule.
UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center is hosting a Teddy Bear Clinic on
May 18th, 2024. This year’s Teddy Bear Clinic is sure to be an exciting adventure that kids will love. Not only will they get to learn more about the doctor's office but also meet some educational professionals who will help teach them about proper hygiene and healthy habits. If you are interested in hosting a booth, please fill out the form here: https://forms.office.com/r/QhusB1NXCw. Please note, all booth volunteers who are not already UMass Memorial employees will need to be onboarded by our volunteer services group and will need to be pre-registered with UMass Chan to be on site. Department Member Recognition
The Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians held their annual Spring Refresher CME Meeting March 8th and 9th in Waltham. Keynote speakers included: David Seltz, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission, Margot Savoy, SVP of Education, Inclusiveness, and Physician Well-Being at AAFP and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07).
Presentations were given by the following UMass faculty and residents:
Manju Mahajan, Nate Macedo, Ethan Eisdorfer, Lee Mancini, Mike Maddaleni, Nancy Byatt, Alec Tributino, Danielle Coderre, Christie Langenberg, Josephine Fowler, Jennifer Bradford, Heather-Lyn Haley, Pratiksha Yalakkishettar, Julie Johnston, Adam Ridley, and Dennis Dimitri.
Sara Shields was chosen as the 2024 Advocacy and Public Health Award winner.
