Focus of the Week - Diversity
Jennifer Bradford, Heather-Lyn Haley and Lynn Hernandez from the UMass Chan Diversity and Inclusion Office hosted a successful Restorative Justice breakout at the FMCH Retreat in May. We have received several requests to lead RJ circles in our clinical and learning spaces, some to build community and others addressing specific past incidents. Reach out to Drs. Bradford or Haley to learn more and explore options using RJ for healing.

Work is underway to develop an online tool for describing microaggressions experienced in FMCH academic and clinical spaces. All information received through the tool will be used in crafting ongoing education and cultural activities to address areas identified for improvement. If you’d like to be part of the pilot testing group to provide feedback, contact Heather-Lyn Haley.
The STFM URM Mentorship Program is now accepting applications for mentees through June 23rd, 2023. This unique program pairs early-career URM faculty with mentors to help guide them on a pathway to success in academic medicine. The focus is on addressing barriers unique to URM faculty, giving tips on overcoming those barriers, and helping guide faculty toward careers that are rewarding and fulfilling. Apply by June 23rd. STFM is also offering a yearlong Leadership through Scholarship Fellowship which offers training and mentorship for early-career underrepresented in medicine (URM) minority faculty with a focus on developing scholarly writing skills for academic advancement and leadership. Fellows will benefit from a curriculum tailored for URM faculty and deep mentorship to develop a personalized leadership and career roadmap, write up and submit at least one manuscript and engage in other scholarly activities. Apply by June 6th.
The Multicultural Women’s Health Summit. Join UMass Chan Medical School and Central Mass Links for this free family wellness event and learn about a wide range of health topics, including preventive care, chronic disease management and mental health. This summit also provides medical students an opportunity to learn about the needs of underrepresented populations and to gain insight into the cultural competency required to provide effective care through interactive exhibits, expert speakers and fun activities. June 17th, 8:30 am to 2:00pm.

Care Gap Updates COMING SOON to Epic EHR (From Population Health)

Universal HCV Screening Expanded - In alignment with USPSTF (United States Preventive Services Task Force), the age recommendation for hepatitis C (HCV) infection screening is expanding. Specifically, the Epic care gap for 1-time, universal HCV screening will apply to any patient aged 18-79 years and includes patients who are expecting.

HCP Added for Patients in Bariatric Bundle – The Health Care Proxy (HCP) will be automatically attached to all patients aged 18-64 in the Bariatric Bundle.

Sixteenth Annual Edward Smith Lecture
The sixteenth annual Edward Smith Lecture will be occurring on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 at 4:00pm on the subject Nothing New Under the Sun: The Struggle for Health Equity. (see flyer for additional information)
We are pleased to announce the launch of the Thomas Zand Refugee Health Initiative (see flyer for additional information) made possible by the funding from the Estate of the late Dr. Thomas Zand – local pediatrician, advocate of children, refugees, and education, which includes:

Thomas Zand Lectureship on Refugee Health, to engage and recognize national leaders in this field. Lectureship recipients will deliver an annual talk on refugee health to the UMass community and engage with local refugee-serving community organizations.

Thomas Zand Refugee Health Community Award, given annually to recognize the work done by Worcester community organizations working with newly arriving refugees and immigrants. Thomas Zand Refugee Health Scholarship, provided to UMass Chan learners to support their attendance to the North American Refugee Health Conference.

Funding Opportunity: The Blue Cross Shields of MA Foundation Special Initiatives grant program provides organizations with a one-time grant of up to $50,000 to pilot or launch a new project over a one-year period which empowers communities to advance health equity. The Department of Psychiatry is enrolling participants with Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) in a clinical research study to look at the effectiveness, safety, and usefulness of an investigational nasal spray medication when it is used alone to improve depressive symptoms. Participants must: be 18 years of age or older, have been diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression, have not adequately responded to at least 2 different antidepressant treatments, must be comfortable with using a nasal spray and not be pregnant or have plans to become pregnant. Slight increase in 7-day average positivity rate to 7.8% (increased by 3.1%).

In house: the 7-day average confirmed positive cases 10 compared to 11 last week.
- Of the 10, 90% were fully vaccinated.
- Of the 5 in house patients positive for COVID in the ICU, 100% were fully vaccinated.
- Overall, the active case trends continue to decline when compared to February.

There were 791 new cases of COVID in the prior 7-days as of 5/25/23.
- The 7-day average of percent positivity is 3.46%.
- There were 13 new confirmed deaths reported during the 7 days.
Other (Global)
China is bracing for new COVID outbreaks. They anticipate 40 million cases per week by the end of June and nearly 65 million new cases per week before the peak in July.

For 2023, we are continuing to work on closing the gap on needed care for BIPOC patients. We aim to provide equitable health care. We want to deliver the highest level of care across all groups. Don't forget to address those care gaps when patients are in the office. As we move towards the end of the fiscal year, we are closing the gap!
