Focus of the Week - Education

Jeanne Cawse-Lucas, MD, Vice Chair of Education

CME Reporter

Did you know that family doctors can report 20 free CME credits per year (60 per cycle) for teaching and an additional 20 per year for point of care reading and reference through Up To Date? To report, log into your AAFP account, go to My Account, report CME. Search for “uptodate” and report it. Teaching is listed under “self directed activities.”

I invite all associate and full professors to join the STFM Letter Writers Bureau. This is an opportunity to pay forward the support that was offered to each of us when we went up for promotion by indicating a willingness to write external letters of review for colleagues going up for promotion. The bureau will be housed in STFM's Quick Consult, and you can indicate the number of letters that you are willing to write per year.

To join, set up a User Account by going to www.stfm.org/quickconsult and following the Member login button.

During the account setup, do the following:

  • Choose "mentoring others" and then check "External Letters for Promotion as your Skills/expertise. Feel free to choose other topics that you have expertise in if you'd like to participate more broadly.
  • Specify how many mentees (AKA letters) you are willing to write at one time. So you can control your involvement.
  • If setup help is needed, access the user guide by clicking on the "lightbulb" in the upper right corner to access the resources and select "Step by Step User Guide". or download the attached PDF provided here.

Jeanne Cawse-Lucas (jeanne.cawse-lucas@umassmemorial.org) is happy to answer any questions about participation; please reach out to Traci Brazelton at tbrazelton@stfm.org if you would like help setting up your account. Thanks again to all of you!

The Peer Consultations for Educators program supports faculty in achieving their professional goals. This initiative is structured to connect experienced UMass Chan educators with faculty members who are interested in advancing their skills in education or scholarship. Areas of focus may include, but is not limited to, enhancing teaching effectiveness, curriculum development, educational research, as well as leadership or innovative projects in education. Faculty seeking consultation will be matched with an educator possessing relevant expertise for targeted, short-term guidance, typically over one or two sessions. The anticipated outcomes include making informed decisions about teacher training, engaging in educational scholarship, pursuing leadership roles, or exploring new educational opportunities. This program is intended to facilitate the achievement of individual goals, foster career development, and contribute to the broader educational mission of UMass Chan. All consultants are distinguished members of the Academy and accomplished educators at UMass Chan.
