On Friday, October 4th, we held a memorial service for Dr. Jim Ledwith, our colleague and friend, at the Epworth Church in Worcester. A special thanks to speakers, including Liam Burke, Beth Mazyck and Eric Rosenthal, Diane McKee, Jay Broadhurst, Phil Fournier, and others. A very special thanks to those who helped organize the event including Karen Rayla and colleague Jackie, Pam Tero, Heather Garron, Linda Cragin and Linda Hollis (particularly with the last-minute assist).

Focus of the Week - Education

The family medicine clerkship is seeking more community preceptors for MS3 students. In addition to $1000 per student, faculty get 20 hours of AAFP CME credit, tuition to one day of Primary Care Days, and an ABFM KSA free of charge. The family medicine clerkship is highly rated by students and preceptors find teaching to be both energizing and inspiring. Please email Mary.Lindholm@umassmemorial.org if interested. 

Faculty for Tomorrow Resident Scholarship

The Faculty for Tomorrow Resident Scholarship is currently accepting applications for the 2025 scholarship until Monday, October 28th, 2024. The 2025 Faculty for Tomorrow Workshop for Residents will be held on May 3rd, 2025 as part of the STFM Annual Spring Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. See link for additional information.

Residency recruitment has officially begun with the opening of ERAS on September 25th! We are off to a strong start with 562 applications for 13 positions in WFMR and 740 applications for 5 positions in FFMR. Michael Smith is doing an awesome job getting people scheduled for interviews and we are excited to start meeting everyone over Zoom starting at the end of October.


Vista Horizons Phase Leadership Applications due by Tuesday, October 15th

The Office of Educational Affairs invites you to consider applying to educational leadership opportunities in support of Vista's Horizons Phase (4th year) for the program leading to the MD degree. There are several positions ranging in effort that will begin in spring 2025. Educators with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences from all domains of UMass Chan Medical School are encouraged to apply. Detailed position descriptions, leadership responsibilities, and applications are available on the SharePoint Vista Horizons Phase Roles and Online Applications Portal open to UMass Chan Medical School faculty and staff.

Call for Members of an Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education Task Force

STFM is accepting applications for a task force to meet a new STFM strategic plan tactic to lead the adoption, implementation, scholarship, and evaluation of ethical artificial intelligence (AI) in family medicine education. Task force members will develop and implement strategies and resources to educate family medicine education teams and learners on advances in AI. On behalf of the Medical Student Education (MSE) Collaborative Steering Committee, I am sharing the call for nominations to join the steering committee for a 3-year term.  STFM colleagues are encouraged to submit self-nominations to begin a 3-year term beginning at the MSE Annual Conference (2025). The MSE Collaborative Steering Committee meets monthly via Zoom, and with e-mail communication between meetings. It is a wonderful opportunity to network and build working partnerships with other STFM members. Application Process:  Please submit the following materials via e-mail to aclithero@salud.unnm.edu and elizabeth_brown@urmc.rochester.edu by Thursday, December 2nd. Working Together: Treating the Whole Person with Chronic Pain

This six-hour training is focused on a collaborative care model between behavioral health clinicians and primary care clinicians caring for patients with chronic pain. Addressing chronic pain is critically necessary in primary care. This webinar will take place on December 6th, 2024 from 10:30am-5:30pm. Worcester Free Clinic Coalition (WFCC) Student Organization - Faculty Advisor Role

Since the passing of Dr. Jim Ledwith, the WFCC is looking for a faculty advisor who will provide strategic guidance and mentorship to one of the largest student groups on campus, with over 75 students in formal roles. 


Responsibilities

  • Meet a few times per year with student co-presidents
  • Assist in renewal process of student organization on campus
  • Available to student co-presidents via email, as needed
  • Support in conflict resolution among students and community members
  • Advocate for students in the free clinics

ANNUAL JUDY SAVAGEAU COAT DRIVE

We are excited to announce another year of the Annual Judy Savageau Coat Drive for Worcester Public Schools! This event is in honor of the late Judy Savageau, who spent 30 years at UMass Chan Medical School working in Family Medicine and Community Health. Judy played a foundational role in supporting our local community through multiple volunteer avenues including her Annual Coats for Kids Campaign. 


EVENT DETAILS:

  • Submit donations via Venmo to @ThomasGiauque (Thomas is a medical student helping with coat drive) or checks to Linda Cragin at  6 Alcott Dr., Northborough, MA 01532.
  • Coat donations are also accepted. Coats donated should be NEW and high school sizes, Women M, L; Men M, L, XL. We are preparing sites at each health center or bring to Benedict or the Department Awards Ceremony on October 29th.

Gender Affirming Care Learning Collaborative (GAC-LC)

Teaching of Tomorrow (TOT) is a faculty development program to build and refine foundational skills for effective clinical teaching in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
