Are You Registered to Vote?

Voting impacts our health--80% of health outcomes are determined beyond clinical walls. The American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recognize voting as a social determinant of health. Through civic engagement, we can not just treat symptoms but tackle the root causes of public health outcomes together.

AAMC has developed a fact sheet in collaboration with Vot-ER, a nonpartisan organization that works to integrate voter education and registration into health care settings. Vot-ER plays an important role in addressing the social determinants of health by meeting potential voters where they are and supporting them in becoming more civically engaged.

Federal laws allow health care institutions to engage in nonpartisan voter registration efforts. Clinicians and healthcare organizations can:

  • Point patients to Vot-ER posters, badges, or handouts
  • Tell patients that their institution offers a service to help them register to vote, but they do not endorse any political party.
  • Help a patient fill out the registration form while remaining neutral.

More information about Vot-ER here.

Focus of the Week - Research

Jennifer Carroll, MD, MPH, Vice Chair, Research

Suzanne Mitchell, MD, MS, Director, Research

(From Jennifer Carroll)

It is my pleasure and honor to introduce myself as the Vice Chair for Research in our Department. I joined the Department earlier this summer and have been off to a great start thanks to the warm welcome I have received from so many of you-thank you! I was previously at the University of Colorado’s Department of Family Medicine and served as Associate Vice Chair for Research and Director of the American Academy of Family Physicians National Research Network.

My research interests include implementation of a variety of practice-based research interventions in family medicine settings, research focused on addressing health disparities and promoting health equity, and integrative medicine-oriented research. I am developing partnerships with colleagues in Africa, Europe, and Canada to promote family medicine scholarship and research skills development globally. I see a lot of synergy with our department’s global health efforts in this area, which is very exciting.

My priorities as Vice Chair will be to support the continued growth of the department’s research programs and integration across our mission areas, work with other departmental leadership to enhance our mentoring approaches, liaise with institutional leadership to build our infrastructure to enable our teams’ success, and also to develop and lead research projects, hopefully in collaboration with many of you. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can-if I don’t get to you first, please reach out to say hi anytime!

Cheers, Jen Carroll

POCUS Faculty Development Sessions Launching!

Please sign up here: https://forms.gle/eP8kyCkFfqLJ2wGw8

Sessions will be limited to 12 participants. Participants should wear loose-fitting clothing. Self-reported CME credit will be available through AAFP.

See the attached job aid for accessing the content in Workday. Completion on a mobile devise is not the preferred platform, but if you must, see the attached job aid.
