UNC MPA News and Events

Apply for the NASPAA Student Simulation Competition Wildfire Mitigation

Since 2015, NASPAA has hosted a yearly Student Simulation Competition to help students network, compete, and learn through experience. This year NASPAA will host the latest VIRTUAL competition on the topic of Wildfire Management on Saturday, March 7th and 14th 2026, for students across the globe. Participants will only need to be available one Saturday of the competition and will be placed on a team after acceptance by NASPAA. Please visit the website for more information on this year’s competition.

NASPAA, or the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration, is the global standard in public service education and serves as our accrediting body. It currently has more than 300 member programs located in the US and 14 countries around the globe. They have a twofold mission to “ensure excellence in education and training for public service and to promote the ideal of public service.” The simulation allows them to carry out this mission and allows students to tackle real-world scenarios while networking with MPA/MPP students from across the world.

The UNC MPA Program will guarantee sponsorship of one on-campus and one online student (with the potential opportunity of additional students as well as we may nominate up to five students). This sponsorship would include payment of registration. It is a wonderful experience to network with other MPA students from across the globe and gain real-world relevant experience. In the past, we have had several site winners and one global winner representing the UNC MPA Program!

If you are interested in participating in this year's competition, please take a moment to complete this short form. The submission deadline is Friday, December 19, 2025. The selected students will be chosen by Director Willow Jacobson for nomination to NASPAA. If you have additional questions, please feel to reach out to Elizabeth Langefeld directly.

Student Spotlight: Alyssa Blair Zimmerman

Alyssa Blair Zimmerman is married to a U.S. Army veteran and comes from a family ingrained in public service.

Her dad served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 13 years and as a police officer for five. Her mom, her “biggest role model,” works for a Veterans Affairs hospice center.

Zimmerman, who will receive her Master of Public Administration degree at Carolina’s Winter Commencement ceremony Dec. 14, is carrying on that public service mission in her own way. She earned her degree from the UNC School of Government while working full-time as an economic development specialist for Franklin County. Article continues on unc.edu
