Student News: Matthew Begley Selected for NCCCMA Scholarship


MPA on-campus format student Matthew Begley was recognized as a recipient of the  North Carolina City and County Managers

Association Student Scholarship at the NCCCMA Winter Seminar this week in

Winston-Salem, NC.. Each year, NCCCMA selects a scholarship recipient from each of 10 MPA programs in North Carolina. Each recipient must be from North Carolina and have experience or exposure in local government.

Faculty Member Leisha Dehart-Davis Wins the

2024 Herbert Simon Award

The School of Government extends its congratulations to faculty member Leisha DeHart-Davis upon her receipt of the 2024 Herbert Simon Award. Given annually by the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA), this award recognizes leading scholars who made significant contributions to the scientific study of bureaucracy. Submissions are considered by a committee of the Midwest Caucus for Public Administration.

Join the POV Challenge

Carolina Across 100 is asking Carolina undergraduate and graduate students to use their talents and skills to share their point of view (POV) on how we can improve mental health and reduce suicide in North Carolina. Using publicly available data and other information, students can get creative to share what they learn and offer their insights through:

Art ·        

Music ·        

Photography ·        

Poetry ·        

Data Visualization

Infographics·      

Interpretive Dance      

And more...  

 

All submissions are welcome as long as they aim to answer one of the three challenge prompts offered on the POV Challenge web page

 

Student submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges and two $500 awards will be offered, as well as honorary mentions. All submissions will be on display at the Engagement Week reception at the UNC School of Government on March 1st. After the competition, submissions will be used in a variety of ways as the Carolina Across 100 initiative continues to engage with communities across the state on issues through programs like Our State, Our Wellbeing

Register your team of 2-5 students by February 16 ·        

Attend aQ&A session on February 19 from 12-1 p.m. ·        

Submit your work by February 25 at midnight ·        

Attend the Engagement Week reception on March 1 from 5-6 p.m.

Spring 2024 Applications Are Now Being Accepted for the Carolina Graduate Certificate for Innovation for the Public Good

The Carolina Graduate Certificate in Innovation for the Public Good (CIPG) gives master’s and doctoral students an educational pathway to explore modern changemaking and practice the skills they need to help create meaningful change in the world. CIPG provides students from any department with the mindset, tools, and methods they need to work effectively across disciplines to solve complex problems. By earning the certificate, students become skilled in methods that they can apply to their doctoral or thesis research. CIPG also equips them with career-ready skills that they can use when working on multi-disciplinary teams in businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies that increasingly demand the ability to apply cross-sector, community-engaged practices.Interested in applying? The Graduate School is currently accepting nominations for the 2024 Boka W. Hadzija Award for Distinguished University Service by a Graduate or Professional Student. This annual award recognizes a currently enrolled graduate or professional student who exemplifies exceptional:

  • Character
  • Scholarship
  • Leadership
  • Service to the University and broader community

Any faculty, staff, or student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill may submit nominations. Students may not self-nominate.

Nominations are due by 5:00PM on Friday, February 16, 2024

UNC events and beyond

UNC-Chapel Hill will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with lectures, performances and exhibitions.


The second Dr. Genna Rae McNeil Endowed Black History Month lecture highlights this year’s events. Keisha N. Blain, a New York Times best-selling author, award-winning historian and professor, will deliver the lecture at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Research in Black Culture and History.


Blain is the author of “Four Hundred Souls,” “Until I Am Free” and “Set the World on Fire.” She is also a columnist for MSNBC and received the 2022 Guggenheim and Andrew Carnegie fellowships.

Public Service Awards


Nominate a Carolina student, faculty, staff member or organization who models exemplary service for the 2024 Public Service Awards from the Carolina Center for Public Service. Awards range from $500 to $1,200. Nominations are due February 13.
