Since 2010, the School of Government has been home to Colin Quashie's SERVICE Mural. The mural depicts 40 African American civic leaders gathered at a diner counter based on the Greensboro Four's 1960 sit-in at F.W. Woolworth. This week, the DTH highlighted the mural with quotes from the artist and the background on the commissioning. Details on the leaders depicted can also be found on the mural's website. | |

Weekly Substance Use Reduction and Recovery Group:
Graduate & Professional School Students, Young Professionals
January 23 – April 30
Tuesdays 1:00-2:00 PM
Via Zoom | Private | Confidential | Staff-facilitated
Join our Weekly Substance Use Reduction and Recovery Group for Grad Students, a supportive community dedicated to enhancing the well-being of graduate and professional school students and young professionals. These meetings are virtual via Zoom every Tuesday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM and designed to support individuals along the spectrum of recovery—whether you're looking to reduce substance use, explore cessation, or maintain ongoing recovery—while improving your overall well-being, exploring self-care strategies, and maintaining a harmonious life.
Our confidential and Student Wellness staff-facilitated sessions offer a blend of discussions, education, and peer support in a confidential and inclusive space, accessible during your lunch break from wherever you are. Here, you'll find a non-judgmental environment to share experiences, build supportive relationships, and gain knowledge about self-care, stress management, and personal growth. We provide strategies for enhancing your personal, academic, and professional life, ultimately minimizing substance-related harms.
We follow SAMHSA's 2012 working definition of recovery: "A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential."
The group is a 'drop-in' space, but we encourage consistent attendance for the best outcomes in aligning your substance use with your values, goals, and health. Please note that this space is exclusively for graduate and professional school students and young professionals in or seeking recovery and is not open to observers or for educational purposes.
For more information or to express interest in our group sessions, please contact recovery@unc.edu. Kindly use the subject line 'Grad Group' for inquiries. Similarly, undergraduate students are welcome to email the same address for services, as there is another group open to students at all academic levels—undergraduate, graduate, and professional school.
Check out Carolina Recovery on Heel Life or visit our website.
