Military-Affiliated Graduate Students Chat & Chew
Thursday, March 10 | 10-11am
Graduate Student Center, 211A West Cameron Ave

Join MAGS for breakfast and a discussion with Amy Rodriguez, PA-C

Amy will lead us in discussion about “Thriving Post Transition” from the military. We’ll explore building an intentional community; the journey from the military to the “civilian world;” and success in the classroom.

Facilitator info: Amy Rodriguez is an Army Veteran and Physician Assistant. She grew up as a “military brat” and is the oldest (and wisest!) of 4 siblings. She is a graduate of West Point (’06).

In the Army, she served in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division (2 deployments to Iraq and 1 to Haiti), and was a Paratrooper and Jumpmaster. After serving, she came to Chapel Hill to do pre-reqs for PA school and attended PA school at Wake Forest University. She joined Campus Health in October 2017.

When she’s not at Campus Health, you can find her running, competing in triathlons, traveling, and hiking with her dog, Penny. Amy is also a former skydiver with almost 800 skydives. She was on the U.S. National Parachute Team and competed at the 2006 World Championship in Russia. Fun fact: Amy was on Wheel of Fortune during Veteran’s Week!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of the DSS staff if you have questions, concerns, or simply want to say hello!

The Heels Care Network at UNC hosted its “Mental Health, Spirituality and Faith: How Do They Connect?” event on Monday — the first in a series of mental health seminars that will be held this semester.
The Heels Care Network is a University platform that seeks to help UNC students find resources including therapists, peer support and free guides about managing mental health in college. The University launched it last month.
Amy Johnson, vice chancellor for student affairs, said that the creation of the network and the ongoing mental health seminar series was inspired by student feedback gathered during the UNC Mental Health Summit on Nov. 15.

The subject of next month’s seminar has yet to be announced by the Heels Care Network, but it will once again be free for all interested students. Participants can RSVP through the Network's website.
Resilience, Self-care, & Emotional Wellness
Processing feelings
This past week has been filled with heavy news and heartache as the world continues to shift around us, and for some this brings up feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, shock, isolation, and even grief.

These feelings are normal. And it is important to check in with yourself and recognize what feelings may be coming up for you.
Learning to manage our emotional reactions to stress is critical in attaining emotional balance and well-being. Beginning to better understand ourselves (our patterns and responses to stress) while keeping things in perspective, and being willing to get help when we need it, is a large component of emotional wellness.
Practicing self-care in these moments is essential and can even help lighten your load.

Try some of these techniques to help process your emotions and stress this week:
  • Try a short meditation or breathing exercise video
  • Slow down by doing a body scan or a full body stretch
  • Write or draw in a journal, try creating a gratitude list, or draw something that brings you peace (email studentwellness@unc.edu for a free gratitude journal).
  • Connect with loved ones. Send your family a text and spend time with friends.
  • Disconnect from devices. Give yourself a break from the news, and media, even if its just for the afternoon.
  • Pay it forward. Do something kind for someone else.
Remember that wellness is a journey, which requires practice. Strive for progress, and not perfection, along the way.
Practicing radical self-acceptance and loving self-compassion can go a long way in helping each of us find the emotional intelligence and wellbeing necessary for a more fulfilling and peaceful life.
This Week at the Writing and Learning Center...
It might take a few tries, but you’ll get your draft churned out eventually! If you’re stuck and lost for wordles, try making an appointment with a writing coach!
