CivX Data to Decision Challenge

The third in the CivX for Smart Cities challenge series, the CivX Data to Decision Challenge, seeks innovative solutions that empower decision-makers to better handle, visualize, and utilize data within Digital Twin environments. The challenge aims to break down data silos, improve real-time decision support, and make these tools more accessible to non-technical stakeholders, helping to create robust and adaptable urban systems for the future.

All that is needed to enter is your 5-page white paper, and a 2-3 minute video to describe your solution!

Blue Clarity is administering this series of four Smart Cities-themed challenges on behalf of the Griffiss Institute. The first two challenges have recently been completed, focused on TAK/ATAK for first responder communications networks, and Enhanced Urban Communication Networks.

This NIST-funded challenge will reward the winning solution with a $20,000 Prize at a virtual Pitch Event held on June 18th, 2025, as well as an inclusion in the Winner's Circle event to be held at the Griffiss Institute in Rome, NY.

Fall 2025 Course: PUBH 785 Community Engagement for Governance

3 Credit Elective Course

Instructor: Dr. Karl Johnson

Time: Friday, 9:05AM - 12:05PM

No Prerequisites

Description: This seminar style and practice-oriented course prepares students to understand the work of public health governance. Students will learn to distinguish between governing and administrative functions of the US and global public health systems, identify and describe the roles and responsibilities of organizational governing boards in assuring the health of populations, and understand the importance of working with non-health governing boards to secure vital conditions for health and well-being. With partner organizations, students will work to co-design and develop evidence-driven approaches to strengthen governance practices to better protect and promote population health outcomes.

Free Statistical / Data Science Consulting

The UNC Department of Statistics and Operations Research announces the availability of free statistical / data science consulting in the Spring semester. Our goal is to teach this important skill to graduate students, but you can get some free data analytic assistance in the process.

The course format involves clients giving a presentation about the problem at hand. This generates a question and answer dialog, which by itself has proven to be useful in helping clients formulate their ideas. Then typically one student is assigned to work on the actual data, with a final written report expected.

In the past we have worked with a very wide range of clients, from Masters students needing help with the statistical end of their dissertation, all the way up to distinguished professors. While there are limits to what can be done in the context of this course, some contacts initially made through this course have led to ongoing joint research, grant proposals and published papers in very diverse fields.

To sign up for this type of consulting, or to discuss this further, please contact Dr. Zhengwu Zhang, Department of Statistics and Operations Research, UNC, CB 3260, Email: Zhengwu_zhang@unc.edu. Additional information is available at the web address:
