MPA Alumnus Wins UNC Diversity Award!


Each year the University recognizes people and groups that have given their time and effort to advance diversity, equity and inclusion at Carolina and in our surrounding community. As has always been the case, this work is vital as we build our community together. This year, Class of 2007 member Christopher Riddick, EdD., was honored in the alumni category. The MPA Intranet has details on everything you'll need to know while you're in the MPA Program! We will spotlight various areas of the Intranet in the Digest to introduce you to its vast resources.


Today, we recommend you check out the MPA Policies page. Sure, we know this one may not be the most fun, but it may be the most useful! You don't want to be caught off guard by not understanding the implications of dropping a course, knowing what your options are for taking a leave of absence from the program, or seeing if you may qualify for an independent study course. All of that and more is on this page.

Registration is now open for PUBA 744-001: Immersion for the Fall 2022 term. Dr. Kimalee Dickerson will be teaching the Immersion, and we are excited to once again have our two formats join together for a weekend (October 6-8, 2022) in Chapel Hill! Here's the course description:


Social Equity in the Public Sector: Self to Systems

Understanding social equity and how individuals and systems work to perpetuate or disrupt inequities is an essential skill for public service leaders. This immersion course will explore how to advance social equity at multiple levels, including the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and structural levels. Topics will include exploring your identity and biases, the role of government in social equity, building and leading equitable organizations, and working together to transform systems.

Celebrate July 4


Gather at Southern Community Park with blankets, chairs, and friends for an evening of community camaraderie and a spectacular fireworks display to celebrate the holiday.

Event opens at 7 p.m. with the fireworks display beginning around 9 p.m.

Parking & Transportation

New for this year, attendees can park for free at the Jackson Deck at UNC Hospitals!

Chapel Hill Transit will be running a free shuttle service from the Jackson Deck starting at 6:30 p.m. The last shuttle will leave the parking deck at 8:30 p.m. No shuttles will run during the show, so arrive early! Masks are required on all Chapel Hill Transit vehicles.

Following the fireworks, shuttles will run until 10:30 p.m.

Please note that Chapel Hill Transit will not operate service in observance of the July 4 holiday. Only the shuttle service from the Jackson Deck to Southern Community Park will be available.

Accessible parking will be available beginning at 7 p.m. in the parking lot closest to the main entrance of the park on Sumac Road. 

ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL STUDENT COORDINATOR


The LGBTQ Center is currently accepting applications for the position of Graduate and Professional Student Program Coordinator. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate or professional program at UNC-Chapel Hill. The person in this position will primarily be responsible for coordinating graduate and professional programs in consultation with the LGBTQ Center staff and the Diversity and Student Success Program Coordinator of the Graduate School. Additional tasks include:

  • Coordinate the LGBTIQA Speaker Series educational program
  • Coordinate and publicize social programming for graduate and professional students
  • Advocate on policy and procedures related to LGBTQ+ graduate and professional students
  • Develop collaborations between the LGBTQ Center and graduate/professional student groups, schools, and departments across campus
  • Coordinate efforts to expand Safe Zone program with graduate students who teach courses, labs, or recitations
  • Assist with Assessment
  • Contribute to the LGBTQ Center Aluminate Publication
  • Maintain LGBTQ Center graduate/professional web page and Graduate School Queer Grads web page and contribute to LGBTQ Center social media
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned



 Length and Time Requirements of Position:

August 8, 2022 – May 8, 2023

20 hours per week with occasional evening program responsibilities.

Compensation: Payment of Tuition and Fees as well as a stipend of $15,000
