The UNC MPA Kickoff Picnic is BACK!

 

The day is set! Join fellow alumni, faculty, staff, friends of the program (and families) to kickoff the academic year with a return of the UNC MPA Kickoff Picnic!

Join the Town of Chapel Hill, the UNC School of Government, the Carolina Center for Public Service, and Student Life and Leadership for an afternoon of engaging with Town departments and learning how to get involved in the local community. Hear from a plethora of Chapel Hill departments, learn how to get involved in potential internship or service opportunities, and civic engagement on a holistic scale. Lunch is provided!

The Writing Center offers a range of support for all graduate students as well as specialized English language support to students whose first language is not English. Note that most programs will be delivered via Zoom, and additional programming may be added later in the semester.

Fall 2022 Welcome Workshop Series

This workshop series is designed to quickly orient students to their new context, offering strategies to help them engage in their graduate studies and their community more successfully. All workshops meet virtually Fridays, 11:15 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. Participants will receive the zoom link after registration.

Dissertation Boot Camps

Boot camp is a week-long opportunity for students currently writing dissertations to set writing goals, practice disciplined writing habits, learn new strategies, and connect with other dissertation writers. It’s offered several times per year and is intended to help graduate students make significant progress in their writing and their sense of community.

  • Virtual boot camps: Sept. 19-23, Oct. 31-Nov. 4, Dec. 12-16
  • In-person boot camp: Oct. 17-21

Intercultural Speaking Group

Speaking Group welcomes American and international participants from the campus and the community. Groups meet for an hour every week to discuss topics of culture, university life, or language learning strategies and resources. Our goal is to create a comfortable space to converse, to share cultural perspectives, and to build global relationships in our local community.

 

Fridays, 3:00 – 4:00 PM. Register here.

Opportunities for International Grad Students:

 

Facilitated Writing Groups ​

Ideal for students at any stage—from their first semester to their defense. Small groups of graduate students and scholars meet weekly to share drafts and receive feedback on any kind of writing: semester papers, dissertation chapters, journal article manuscripts, grant proposals, class blog posts, reading reflections, conference posters, etc. Groups can be disciplinary or multidisciplinary, and discussions are facilitated by specialists in academic writing and the English language. Open to degree-seeking UNC graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and visiting students and scholars.

 

Schedules and locations are determined by participants’ availability. Register here.

 

Academic Writing for Graduate Students

This course will provide an introduction to the stylistic features of academic writing at the graduate level. It will focus on the important linguistic features and on common strategies for organizing information. Emphasis will be placed on students developing familiarity with the writing style of their own academic disciplines. Course text: Academic Writing for Graduate Students. Degree-seeking UNC graduate students and postdoctoral scholars have priority registration. Others will be placed on a waiting list until space is available.

 

Section 1 (Zoom): Thursdays, 12:30-1:45 p.m., September 1-September 29. Register.

Section 2 (Zoom): Wednesdays, 2:30-3:20 p.m., September 14-October 19. Register.

 

US English Pronunciation

This course will provide instruction on the phonetics of American English and will allow for ample practice time in pairs with English native speakers and in small groups. Lessons will focus on segmental units such as vowels and consonants as well as supra-segmental units including syllables, stress and pitch. Required text: Clear Speech: Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North American English (4th Edition). Degree-seeking UNC graduate students and postdoctoral scholars have priority registration. Others will be placed on a waiting list until space is available.

Happy Fall Semester! The Multicultural Health Program (MCHP) is hosting a Meet and Greet as our Fall Kickoff Program. The event will be held on Monday, August 29th from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. This is a chance for racially-minoritized students, staff, and faculty to meet our staff and learn more about our services and upcoming programs. This event is open to everyone, regardless of identity.

 

We would love for you to join us as we introduce ourselves and share information about upcoming programs centered on our continuous work to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health in communities of color. Join us for the 1st branch meeting of the 2022-2023 program year with dynamic speaker and expert on gerrymandering: Asher D. Hildebrand, Assoc. Professor of the Practice in the Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke University. Prior to joining the Sanford faculty, Asher served for nearly 15 years in Congress and on political campaigns, holding senior leadership roles as Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative David Price (D-NC) and as Director of Policy and Research for President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign in North Carolina—so he also has worked on these issues directly as a practitioner.

Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit - November 2022


You can now register for the 2022 South & Appalachia Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit in Chapel Hill, NC.

 

We're delighted to announce that our closing keynote speaker on November 4 will be Dr. Akilah Watkins, President and CEO of the Center for Community Progress. Dr. Watkins' work focuses on helping drive impactful reform on such issues as land banking, property vacancy, childhood obesity, community health, and economic development.

 

Dr. Watkins will be speaking in the afternoon. Our breakfast plenary session will feature Jeff Bell, the Director of the North Carolina Arts Council.

 

We'll be sharing information about the breakout sessions soon. There will be about 40 of them, and they will cover a wide range of topics: environmental protection, creative placemaking in rural areas, enhancing town/gown relationships, community engagement, issues in public art planning, and more.
