Resources this Fall
Unfortunately, as you know, we have had another concerning event on campus this week. For all those affected, UNC will continue to offer the resources below. Please do look into them.
-
The University has set up a hotline for students, faculty, staff, parents and the community to address concerns and questions. It can be accessed by calling 919-918-1999. For updates on alerts, visit alertcarolina.unc.edu.
-
Instructor Tracy Miles recommends the National Child Traumatic Stress Network for information on best practices in talking about trauma, conveying information to children if they wonder wat happened, or related information.
-
Also, while it was not an event of mass violence, information on PTSD after mass violence may be helpful given the unknowns at the time and the feelings people may share. The National Center for PTSD has resources on their website.
- Please also check out:

The Heels Care Network offers all Tar Heel faculty, staff, and students a variety of tools to support each other and to access the many mental health and well-being resources at Carolina. Carolina friends and family members will also find referral resources and ways that you can help on this site, too.
| |
|
Counseling and Psychological Services are available to any students who need to speak with a mental health provider. CAPS can be reached via 919-966-3658 or caps@unc.edu.

|
If you need help, the UNC-Chapel Hill Employee Assistance Program is available. The EAP is a confidential counseling and resource program that is designed to help University employees and their families deal with both personal and work-related concerns.

Saludos! On behalf of the Latinx Heritage Month planning committee, the Carolina Latinx Center, Student Life and Leadership, and Carolina Union Activities Board, we are pleased to announce the Latinx Heritage Month celebration at UNC for 2023. The heritage month will be honored from Friday, September 15 through Sunday, October 15.
The national recognition of the month is Hispanic Heritage Month, but at UNC Chapel Hill, we have named the celebration Latinx Heritage Month to be inclusive of the experiences and identities of our students, staff and community. Our annual four weeks of programming is a multicultural, and collaborative effort planned and coordinated by students, faculty and staff. It is intended to invite our university community to learn, celebrate, and honor the important presence of Latin American immigrants and their descendants in the US.
Our 2023 theme, LatinxVerse: El Universo Es Tuyo, encourages thinking beyond the box society has placed us into, expanding our understanding of what it means to be Latino beyond societal expectations. It celebrates our past and present while recognizing the ongoing evolution of Latinx identity and experiences. We are claiming the universe as ours and are ready for our generation’s opportunity to take the lead.
The LatinxVerse is all about celebrating the diverse and complex experiences of Latinx individuals! We believe that our identities and experiences are shaped by multiple factors and we're embracing the infinite possibilities of Latinidad. It has no one look, sound, or feeling. The Latinx community is limitless. Join us on our journey to create a vibrant and dynamic LatinxVerse and claim El Universo!
The new generation is ready for their opportunity to lead and want to hear from a fellow Gen Z Trailblazer. Therefore in line with our theme, our keynote speaker will be Katya Echazarreta. On June 4th, 2022, she became the first Mexican-born Woman in Space after being selected by Space for Humanity for a mission to analyze the "Overview Effect". She's featured in "Mission Unstoppable" on CBS, hosted the YouTube series "Netflix IRL," and was honored with her own Barbie. She's also an accomplished electrical engineer who worked at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. We are excited as she shares her experiences breaking down barriers and embracing her identities.

UNC LGBTQ Center Upcoming Events
Are you interested in becoming an LGBTQ+ student leader? Do you have what it takes to escape Wonderland? The LGBTQ Center is partnering with Chapel Thrill Escapes to bring you one full day of mystery and madness! Join us at Cobb Residence Hall on Friday, September 15th to discover information about the LGBTQ Center's new B.O.N.E.S. program. The B.O.N.E.S. program, formerly our student ambassador program, is focused on developing leadership and advocacy skills among our LGBTQIA+ and allied students. Students will work through the escape room in groups of eight (8) to build camaraderie and stretch their problem-solving skills. Pizza, soda, and snacks will be provided! Registration is required.
Discord Launch and Open Call for Moderators
We asked and you answered! The LGBTQ Center is excited to announce the launch of our new Discord server, focused on strengthening community connection among our LGBTQIA+ and allied students on campus. The server is still in its early stages, but we are striving to build a platform that works for queer students, by queer students. If you are interested in taking on a more active role and becoming a server moderator, please reach out to us at lgbtq@unc.edu to discuss details.
At this time, the LGBTQ Center GroupMe will remain open. However, we will be shifting primary communications to Discord as we continue to establish our presence there.
LGBTQ Game Night at the Carolina Gaming Arena
Our first Club Soda of the year is another epic collaboration with the Carolina Gaming Arena! On Tuesday, September 19th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, we invite you to join us for "Out & Overcooked:" a night of Overcooked 2 at the Carolina Gaming Arena (555 Paul Hardin Drive, Chapel Hill, NC). If you're not a fan of co-op and prefer to participate solo, the other consoles and games at the arena will still be available, which you can find listed on the CGA website. All students are welcome! Pizza, soda, and snacks will be provided.
Trans Talk Returns!
You all have been so patient with us as we work to regroup and reassess in the absence of our previous Trans Talk Tuesday group facilitator. We are deeply grateful for Anole's time with us, and it was important for our staff to take the necessary space to find just the right person to fill their shoes—or in this case, people! The LGBTQ Center, in collaboration with UNC CAPS, is thrilled to introduce not one, but TWO new Trans Talk group facilitators this year: Sophia Davis and Freya Liu! Going forward, the group will be called Trans Talk Space, and they will meet every other Friday from 3:00 to 4:30 PM starting THIS WEEK, September 15th. The group will be held at SASB South in the Student Wellness Zen Den (Suite 1310).
Trans Talk Space is a peer support and discussion group, intended to provide community support and connection among folks on the basis of gender identity. All students, staff, faculty, and community members who hold identities as transgender, genderqueer, or gender-questioning are welcome!
Please note this is not an educational space where people are expected to explain their identities. Cisgender allies are welcome to contact the LGBTQ Center at (919) 843-5376 or email us at lgbtq@unc.edu to talk with our staff about what educational resources are available to you.
Celebrate diversity on campus through a showcase of songs from around the world. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to show off their singing talents at the “Multicultural Mic Drop” karaoke event! RSVP to sign up as a performer or audience member below. There will be food and swag. The top three performers will win a prize! This event is co-sponsored by the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion and The Graduate School’s Diversity and Student Success program.
Equality NC is looking for motivated young LGBTQ people ages 18 to 26 who have deep ties to a community in North Carolina that is outside of major urban hubs (i.e. outside of Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Asheville). RYE Fellows get access to 10 months of coaching, mentorship, project funding, skills development training, and a monthly living stipend of $1,000. We know that the RYE Fellowship is a transformative experience for young people, and are excited to welcome a new cohort to the program this fall. The deadline to apply is September 15th.
This year’s theme for Durham Pride is “GIVE THEM THEIR FLOWERS." As the subtitle describes, we offer honor and gratitude for the courage and leadership of our trans communities, particularly our Black and brown trans women and non-binary folks. The events this year will provide opportunities for us to center and celebrate members of the LGBTQ+ community who boldly certify our public standards for human dignity, all while facing physical violence, hateful legislation, and other harmful experiences. We intend to commemorate our ancestors who sowed past seeds that still bear fruit today and to pay tribute to the people who help us be our best selves now, embodying our highest values and greatest visions for a more whole, safe, and liberated Durham, North Carolina.
