UNCF Cleveland news & updates
May 2021
Greetings Cleveland Community!
As we begin UNCF’s 2021/22 Campaign which started on April 1st, UNCF is happy to introduce our inaugural UNCF Cleveland Campaign Newsletter. The goal is to provide the community with a tool that will keep everyone up to date on what opportunities are available as well as current news locally, regionally and nationally about UNCF. This will be a place where scholarships and internship information can be access though the provided links and updates from Andrea L. Neely UNCF Regional Development Director, Anthony Brown, UNCF’s NAC President and Laura R. Williams, President; UNCF Cleveland IAC and Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association as we continue to navigate our new normal during this pandemic as we work to fulfill our mission while working remotely.

The UNCF Cleveland campaign continues to serve the community as we have closed our physical office in 2020 however our outreach is still present in the community.

We are celebrating our annual Northern Ohio Scholarship program that is currently open for students for the Fall 2021 school year.

The campaign is supported by UNCF’s Regional area office lead by Andrea L. Neely, Regional Development Director, Anthony Brown, UNCF NAC President, the Northern Ohio Inter- Alumni Council with the support of the Cleveland Council of Black Colleges Alumni Association continue to serve the northern Ohio community annually. The Northern Ohio Scholarship is UNCF’s signature resource program for Cleveland that continues to invest in better futures for students that are freshmen to seniors in college. This is in addition to the hosted Destination HBCU College Scholarship Fair.

This work would not be possible without the investment from our community partners such as the Burton D. Morgan Foundation, Cleveland Foundation, Cleveland Municipal School District, Akron School District, Cleveland Metroparks, Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc, Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Gamma Chapter, and Cleveland Regional Transit Authority to name few. Along with all the individuals, churches and community partners who I have not named that invest in mission of UNCF and what it means to the community.

National News
Last week UNCF released a media statement about Milton Jones being named the first African American Board Chair of UNCF. The fact that he is the first Black Board Chair in UNCF's history ignited some conversation, comments and response, particularly on social media.

In an effort to keep you in the loop and provide more context and related messaging, please find attached the press release that was issued as well as a media statement from Dr. Lomax. I am also sharing a News One article that provides some additional framing around this announcement.

We are working to develop a longer term social media strategy to address some of these key points and issues raised and will keep you in the loop.
