ECenter Receives National Recognition for Its Growth
The ECenter won the “2017 Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Center Award” from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC)! The award honors an outstanding new entrepreneurship center that is five years old or less; the ECenter opened in January 2016.
“The GCEC represents the best entrepreneurship centers across the globe with more than 250 members in 15 countries. “This award category was the most competitive with nearly 25 submissions,” said Brad Burke, executive director of Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers. “We are pleased to recognize the progress made by UNH in a very short period of time.” GCEC member institutions include University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Rice University, Babson University, UCLA, and Northwestern.”
“I accept this award on behalf of the entire UNH team, alumni supporters, and the passionate idea-driven students who I get to work with every day,” said Ian Grant, director of the ECenter. “It is an honor to be recognized by our peers for the work we have accomplished in only two years. It has always been about helping students, faculty, and alumni become problem-solvers and idea creators first, and then supporting them as they take those ideas to the next level. We provide an exciting co-working facility for students to interact with each other, as well as fundamental engagement opportunities and innovative programs like i2 Passport, which rewards students for exploring ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship with the ability to win $25,000 in cash prizes to help pay off student loans and tuition.”

i2 Passport $19,500 Awarded to Students for
Exploring Ideas, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship
At the end of the 2017 spring semester, UNH’s
Peter T. Paul Entrepreneurship Center (ECenter) awarded $19,500 to six UNH students as part of the pilot of the i2 Passport Program (Ideas and Innovation Passport Program), funded by a generous gift from Harry Patten ’58.
“With this gift from Mr. Patten, we were able to provide every UNH undergraduate degree-seeking student with access to a wide variety of programs in the areas of ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship while tackling the number one pain point for students today: student debt,” said ECenter director Ian Grant.
The i2 Passport Program is designed to drive voluntary activity and event engagement by all undergraduate students in the areas of ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship with the reward of winning money to help pay off student loans or tuition. Students are awarded “visa stamp credits” in their "passports" for each identified activity in which they participate.
On September 18th, we launched the 2017-2018 academic year iteration of the i2 Passport Program, sponsored by Harry Patten, '58. This iteration provides participating students with the chance to win $25,000 in cash prizes to help pay off student loans and tuition, with an additional focus on FirstGen students (first in family to attend college).
Just a few months into the semester, we've hosted or supported about a dozen activities/events for which students earn Visa Stamp Credits, making their way along one of the 27 different pathways to $50-$7,500 of the total $25,000 in prizes! To see more information, check out

Maurice Prize for Innovation Fund
The ECenter is pleased to announced the creation of the J. Dolores and Alfred P. Maurice Prize for Innovation Fund. Alfred P. Maurice donated $150,000 to create an endowed gift to benefit undergraduate student innovation.
ECenter Director Ian Grant remarked, “We are so honored that Alfred Maurice sees the value in encouraging, supporting, and rewarding undergraduate students to be creative and innovative with ideas and solutions. This prize will help the ECenter continue to build the growing innovation culture on campus whether the student idea is a product, social venture, or service.”
The Fund is expected to award its first prize of approximately $5,000 in 2018. All UNH undergraduate students are eligible to participate in the Challenge and receive the Prize.
The ECenter is the hub of all things ideas, innovation and entrepreneurship and open to all UNH Durham students from all colleges. This is the third such fund created at a university by Alfred Maurice.

Four UNH Students Inducted as University Innovation Fellows
Four students recently completed the UIF training: Devin McMahon ('19, Paul College of Business and Economics), Michelle Paradise ('20, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences), Nicholas Stuart ('20, Paul College of Business and Economics), and Nadia Fereydooni ('19, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences).
Devin, Michelle, Nick, and Nadia will be taking on various projects around the Durham campus to expand ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship at UNH!
The UIF program empowers students to become agents of change at their schools. Fellows work to ensure that their peers gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to compete in the economy of the future and make a positive impact on the world.
To accomplish this, Fellows advocate for lasting institutional change and create opportunities for students to engage with innovation, entrepreneurship, design thinking and creativity at their schools. Fellows design innovation spaces, start entrepreneurship organizations, host experiential learning events, and work with faculty to develop new courses.
The program has trained more than 1,200 students since its creation.

Summer Seed Grant 2017 Winners
Summer is one of the best times for students to work on their entrepreneurial ideas and early stage start-ups and take them to the next level through the development of prototypes, business models and/or companies. The ECenter's Summer Seed Grant enables three UNH students to receive $3500 each to work on their ideas/early-stage start-ups over the summer instead of having to find a summer job. The Grant winners also receive weekly 1:1 mentorship, work space at the ECenter, and marketing consultation with RAKA.
All University of New Hampshire students are eligible to submit proposals. This also may be especially interesting to students that have enrolled in entrepreneurship courses and programs of study, students who are members of the entrepreneurship club, student participants in the Holloway Prize Competition and/or the NHSVIC, and students who participated in the Undergraduate Research Conference who aspire to commercialize their research.
